New York’s largest geothermal residential project tops out in Greenpoint

New York's largest geothermal residential project has topped out on the Greenpoint waterfront. Located at 1 Java Street, the two-tower development features 834 rental units, a climate-resilient shoreline, and 13,000 square feet of retail space. Slated for completion in 2026, the all-electric project's sustainable features are expected to reduce annual carbon emissions from heating and cooling by 53 percent compared to traditional residential systems.

A housing lottery launched this week for 125 affordable apartments at a huge residential complex in the Bronx. Located at 1600 Grand Avenue in Morris Heights, the 14-story building is phase one of the Starhill development, an affordable housing complex with a total of 570 affordable apartments. New Yorkers earning 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, and 80 percent of the area median income, or between $24,446 for a single person and $134,160 for a household of five, can apply for the apartments, which range from $616/month for one-bedrooms to $2,066/month two-bedrooms.

Bronx Point phase one opens with 542 new homes and a waterfront park

The first phase of a major mixed-use development in the South Bronx has officially opened. Officials on Thursday unveiled 542 new units of affordable housing and a 2.8-acre waterfront public park now complete as part of the $349 million Bronx Point project. The development will also be home to the Universal Hip Hop Museum, which will open in 2025 as the first museum of its kind in the country.

282 affordable apartments up for grabs in Far Rockaway, from $388/month

Applications are now being accepted for 282 affordable units at a new residential development in Queens. Located at 1626 Village Lane, the building is part of the third phase of the Rockaway Village Apartments, a huge housing complex that is replacing an abandoned strip mall. New Yorkers earning 30, 50, and 80 percent of the area median income, or between $16,252 annually for a single person and $140,080 for a household of seven, are eligible to apply for the units, which range from $388/month studios to $1,968/month three bedrooms.

$87M restoration of historic Orchard Beach Pavilion kicks off in the Bronx

Construction kicked off this week on a project to reconstruct the historic bathhouse and pavilion at Orchard Beach in the Bronx. The city's Parks Department and the Economic Development Corporation on Tuesday broke ground on the $87 million reconstruction of the 140,000 square-foot landmarked pavilion, which includes a major renovation of its historic architecture, new amenities for the community, and increased accessibility.

NYPL and Marvel team up to release special Spider-Man library card

The New York Public Library and Marvel Entertainment are releasing a limited-edition Spider-Man library card this month. Debuting just in time for New York Comic Con this week, the card will be available on a first-come-first-serve basis at NYPL branches throughout the Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island starting October 11. The collaboration marks the 60th anniversary of Spider-Man's first comic book appearance in the 15th edition of Amazing Fantasy.

Located at 1101 President Street, The Arch rises 16 stories, contains 355 rental units, and offers residents amenities like a furnished rooftop, indoor-outdoor gym, and a work-from-home business center. The more than 160 market-rate apartments start at $2,875/month for a studio, $3,212/month for a one-bedroom, $4,514/month for a two-bedroom, and $5,675/month for a three-bedroom, according to the building's website.

Developed by Phipps Houses, the Rockaway Village Apartments consist of three buildings within a massive complex, which is currently under construction on site of a former abandoned shopping center. New Yorkers earning 30, 40, 50, 60, 80, and 100 percent of the area median income can apply for the lottery units, which range from $388/month studios to $1,885/month three-bedrooms.

Design concept transforms shipping containers into outdoor stages for NYC

As the weather warms up, so will New York City's arts and culture scene. The city's Open Culture program that allows institutions to put on ticketed shows and events kicked off this month, preceded by the state's NY PopsUp initiative, which promises to present over 300 unannounced concerts and performances statewide. Providing another way for New Yorkers to safely enjoy live performances again, architecture firm Marvel has developed a concept that converts portable shipping containers into stages for outdoor theatrical and musical productions.
