Catch a dream in this Catskills tipi for $145 a night, fireflies included
The Sioux definitely knew what they were doing when it came to creating year-round homes tucked away in awe-inspiring nature. The Bellfire Teepee in the Meeker Hollow in Roxbury, NY, available via Airbnb for $145 a night, is a magical way to appreciate those micro-living skills from long ago while stargazing on a 10-acre property bordering miles of forest. The owners of this cozy escape, a pair of Brooklyn expat artists, chose the location “with privacy and tranquility in mind.” Their farmhouse is 500 feet away, so there’s no need to feel lost in the woods, but you’re nestled between a creek, maple trees and a wildflower field, just in case you actually want to feel lost in the woods.
The 18-foot Bellfire Tipi is a unique, custom-crafted getaway, complete with bespoke furniture, wool carpets, cedar floors and carefully-curated decorative pieces. It looks perfect for meditation, cuddling or just kicking back after a stressful week in the city.
The space serves modern needs as well, a subject covered in the short tutorial you’ll get upon arrival.
There is no electricity, but candles and camping lanterns are provided, as is a solar phone charger. If it starts to pour, the tipi’s smoke flaps can be closed over the top to make sure you stay dry. There is a camping shower behind the tipi and an outhouse with a wash station and a composting toilet 50 feet away.
A charming kitchenette includes a camping stove, tea kettle, ceramic coffee dripper, mugs, plates, silverware, saucer, pan, coffee, tea, sugar, salt, pepper, kitchen utensils and drinking water.
Outside the tipi, you’ll find a stone fire pit with seating, a charcoal grill, and a hammock (just in case you haven’t fully left all the stress behind).
That adorable outhouse was designed and built by the hosts using reclaimed barn wood and cedar roofing.
As mentioned, the main farmhouse (also available for stays via Airbnb ) offers free wifi–and yet another place to chill–on the patio should the need arise.
We’re told by the hosts that June and July are peak lightning bug season, which sounds like a pretty magical amenity you definitely won’t experience in the city.
