Babilus: Organically Textured Vases Designed to Resemble Ancient City Skylines

Babilus is a collection of vases made by Tel Aviv designer Nir Meiri.  The shapes of the vases were designed to resemble architecture found in ancient cities such as alters and temples, and the name Babilus is used in reference to the age-old city of Babylon. Each form is made from several layers of materials staked in various combinations. When viewed together, the collection simulates an antique city skyline, however each vase was also designed to stand alone with the intent of igniting the imagination.

Visitors to this past weekend’s 12th Annual Open House New York were treated to tours of Manhattan’s first fully robotic parking system, an African Burial Ground National Monument in Tribeca, and this 4,400-square-foot “superdesk" winding its way through the Chelsea offices of the Barbarian Group, a New York-based creative agency.

Orikomi: Hand-Crafted Pendant Lights That Help Women Build Houses

Designed by the Portuguese label blaanc, Orikomi is a line of paper light fixtures that are sure to add a soft elegance to any interior. The shades' intricate texture and solid structure is formed through a series of symmetrical folding patterns. Not only will these pendant lights illuminate your kitchen table, but also the lives of others. A portion of the proceeds for every piece sold is given to the Adobe Women Project, an organization co-founded by the design firm's owners to help women in Mexico build their own houses (with their own two hands).

Orwell Hybrid Bed-Sofa-Cabin Recaptures the Intimacy of Home

The Orwell is a delightful design that combines the best of a sofa, bed, and cabin into one well-rounded piece of furniture. Designers Pablo Figuera and Álvaro Goula selected the name Orwell in reference to the surname of the '1984' writer and the impetus of the product idea "to recapture the intimacy which can sometimes be lost, even within our own homes." The piece is not only a place to sit or lie down, but it's also an invitation to climb inside and revisit the pillow-fort of your childhood.

Nobu, A Transforming Desk-Shelf Inspired by Vintage Carrycases

For many living in New York City, or other densely populated communities, space is considered a treasured resource not to be squandered. In these situations efficiency is key, which is why we welcome with open arms Nubo, the 2.0 version of the traditional wall shelf. This bubble shaped shelf transforms from a utilitarian wall shelf or desk, into a treasure-box-bulletin-board—reminiscent of a vintage travel case, like the blue Pan-Am case of the 1960s. The Nobu was designed by the Italian-Danish duo known as GamFratesi, and first presented at imm Cologne.

The noun Eyrie is "a large nest of an eagle or other bird of prey, built high in a tree or on a cliff." Take it poetically or quite literarily, like this Dutch design studio recently did. The Eyrie Bench by Floris Wubben is a cumulus of interconnected wooden ash slats resting on tree branches that form its legs. Sculptural and natural, this seat works as a human nest inviting you to sit back and take a rest.

World’s First OLED Panel Will Bring Buildings 40,000+ Hours of Energy-Efficient Lighting

New York buildings racking up big energy bills may soon be able to breathe a sigh of relief. Thanks to new OLED (Organic Light Emitting Diode) technology, lighting will be getting greener, healthier and much more energy efficient. This November, LG Chem, Korea's largest chemical company, will bring their new OLED panels into production. The new panels will boast 100 lumens per watt, a life of 40,000+ hours (a world's best, outperforming Osram, Philips, and Panasonic; and almost on par with conventional LEDs), and be flexible enough to be used in everything from automotive to architecture. Currently plans are to focus distribution on markets in North America and Europe, and so far LG Chem has secured contracts with more than 50 lighting companies, including Atlanta-based Acuity Lighting.

Nucleo’s Jade Stools Crystallize 200-Year-Old Oak Branches

Turin, Italy-based design collective Nucleo has developed a series of extraordinary stools they called "Jade." Created by director Piergiorgio Robino, these unique cubic pieces were made by submerging organic material into a mold full of a liquid polymer. The technique evolved from the studio’s previous works, but the difference lies in the precious color and the embedded log, which was part of a 200-year-old oak tree.
