Fifth Ave celebrates 200th anniversary with car-free birthday bash

One of the world's most famous streets turns 200 this year. In 1824, the first section of Fifth Avenue opened, marking the start of its transformation from a country road to an iconic thoroughfare known for its upscale retail and residences and cultural clout. In celebration of this milestone, the Fifth Avenue Association and the City of New York announced plans to throw the Avenue a 200th birthday party on December 8, kicking off a year-long series of anniversary programming.

6 injured after crane collapses in Hudson Yards

Four civilians and two firefighters sustained minor injuries on Wednesday morning when a construction crane on the border of Hudson Yards and Hell's Kitchen caught fire and partially collapsed onto Tenth Avenue. The fire occurred 45 stories above the construction site at 550 Tenth Avenue at roughly 7:25 a.m. when the engine compartment of the crane caught fire. The fire gradually weakened the crane's cable and sent 16 tons of concrete and the crane's boom plummeting to the ground, causing damage to 555 Tenth Avenue on its descent, according to the fire department.

Brower Park Library reopens within the Brooklyn Children’s Museum

The Brooklyn Public Library's Brower Park branch has joined forces with another Crown Heights institution: the Brooklyn Children's Museum. After facing a hefty price tag of $5.6 million to make necessary improvements at its existing building, the library instead moved to the ground floor of the museum, according to Patch, with the branch officially open as of last week. Located at 155 Brooklyn Avenue, the library includes a main reading room, a community room, a colorful children's space for both reading and play, as well as an outdoor reading terrace.

Century 21 reopens in the Financial District

New York City's favorite discount department store is back. Century 21 on Tuesday officially reopened its flagship at 22 Cortlandt Street in the Financial District three years after filing for bankruptcy and closing all of its locations. The renovated store has four floors with men's, women's, and children's apparel, including footwear, outerwear, handbags, accessories, and fragrances. To honor its connection to the city, the famed store has added "NYC" to its logo.

City breaks ground on $1.6B project to protect Gowanus Canal from pollution

New York City on Wednesday broke ground on one of two new underground storage tanks that will prevent pollution of Brooklyn's Gowanus Canal. The $1.6 billion project will prevent up to 12 million gallons of sewer overflow from entering the canal during rainstorms and flooding events. The first tank, bounded by Nevins Street, Butler street, and Degraw Street, will hold up to eight million gallons of sewage waste and include 3.6 acres of public open space on the waterfront.

Lower East Side icon Economy Candy is opening new store in Chelsea Market

New York City's oldest retail candy shop is expanding for the first time in its over 85-year history. Economy Candy, which has been satisfying sweet tooths on the Lower East Side since 1937, will open a new location in Chelsea Market this week. Called "A Taste of Economy Candy," the store is a mini version of the original sweet shop, offering a selection of vintage treats and classic candies on rotation every month.

New uniforms for Empire State Building workers take cue from the skyscraper’s Art Deco flair

Employees of the Empire State Building's 86th-floor Observatory will look a little different the next time you see them. The uniforms of Observatory hosts and gift shop attendants have been given a modern makeover, courtesy of fashion designer Peyman Umay, who for the last two years worked to create a look that would complement the style of the iconic Art Deco building and the observatory's exhibit galleries. Replacing the previous burgundy and black attire, the new uniforms are light gray with blue trimming on the lapels, collars, and pocket flaps.

Central Park’s first named gate since 1862 honors the exonerated ‘Central Park Five’

A new gate in Central Park will permanently honor the "Central Park Five," the five Black and Latino teens who in 1989 were convicted of a crime they didn't commit. "The Gate of the Exonerated" commemorates the exoneration of all five men, each of whom unjustly served between six and 12 years in prison before being cleared in 2002. Located on 110th Street between Malcolm X Boulevard and Fifth Avenue, the new entrance was unveiled on Monday, exactly 20 years after their convictions were overturned, marking the first named gate in Central Park since 1862.

Target’s newest Bronx location opens near Fordham University

Target's New York City takeover shows no signs of slowing. The chain retailer will open a new store in the Bronx on Sunday, becoming the 96th location in the greater New York City area and fourth in the borough. The store, located at 215 East Fordham Road, joins many commercial businesses around Fordham Plaza, just off the Grand Concourse and near Fordham University.

Queens' first planetarium will open in Astoria, New York State Sen. Michael Gianaris announced on Thursday. Using a $1 million state grant, the planetarium will be built as part of a major renovation of the Variety Boys and Girls Club of Queens (VBGCQ). A new man-made underwater habitat with 20 million juvenile oysters was installed along the northern shore of Gansevoort Peninsula in the Hudson River this week. As part of a major project to restore and protect Hudson River Park's 400-acre Estuarine Sanctuary, the reef-like system includes hundreds of submerged "reef balls" and "gabions" seeded with baby oysters. Ultimately, the project aims to create an oyster reef complex, improve habitats for organisms found in the river, and help mitigate the effect of storm surges.

Blue lamp posts in Battery Park City illustrate height of potential flooding from next severe storm

A new project along Battery Park City's waterfront illustrates the alarming implications of climate change and the urgent need to protect the city's coastlines. The Battery Park City Authority (BCPA) painted 11 light poles situated along the length of the esplanade to indicate the levels water could rise to during a storm surge in a future severe weather event. The blue paint on the poles ranges in height from 18 to 23.5 feet above sea level, and informative banners have been installed to keep visitors educated and engaged.

New Jersey's American Dream mega-mall and Skyviews of America on Wednesday announced the opening date for Dream Wheel, a 300-foot tall Ferris wheel with incredible views of the Manhattan skyline, the Hudson River, and the New Jersey Meadowlands. The Dream Wheel, which can hold 16 passengers at a time during a 30-minute ride, will open to the public on April 13.

NYC plans to replace Coney Island boardwalk with sustainable plastic decking

The New York City Parks Department announced this month $114.5 million in funding will be used to kick off the reconstruction of Coney Island's landmarked Riegelmann Boardwalk in the first such overhaul since the wooden walkway was built in the 1920s. But not everyone is on board with the reconstruction, which involves replacing the length of the hardwood boardwalk with recycled plastic decking as part of a sustainability plan. Some residents feel the synthetic material is a poor choice for the waterfront icon.

The upscale retail and dining wing of New Jersey's American Dream mall finally opened last week after a pandemic-related delayed. Dubbed "The Avenue," the 300,000-square-foot hall is anchored by a two-level Saks Fifth Avenue, now the only location in the Garden State. Other stores now open at American Dream include Dolce & Gabbana, Hermès, Mulberry, Johnny Was, and renowned Italian restaurant, Carpaccio, the first location of the establishment in the Northeast.

A new Brooklyn Trader Joe’s is opening in Williamsburg this year

As was first reported by Greenpointers, Trader Joe's will be opening its third location in the borough this year. Currently, the beloved grocer has stores at City Point in Downtown Brooklyn and in Brooklyn Heights. The new outpost will be in Williamsburg at 200 Kent Avenue, a new commercial building between North 2nd and 3rd Streets near the waterfront.
