Art Nerd New York’s top event picks for 2/9-2/15

In a city where hundreds of interesting events occur each week, it can be hard to pick and choose your way to a fulfilling life. Ahead Art Nerd founder Lori Zimmer shares her top picks for 6sqft readers! Love is in the air with Valentine's Day around the corner, and Times Square is proving that Love Trumps Hate with a day of weddings, engagements and of course public art. Brookfield Place is celebrating the Chinese Lunar New Year with a site specific installation by Amy Kao, and the New York Transit Museum is celebrating the long-awaited opening of the Second Avenue Subway. The Center for Architecture is highlighting 20 talented African American Architects, and there's a 6,000-pound ice spectacle to be found in Central Park. Williamsburg’s William Vale Hotel Launches Website, New Renderings & Video

Williamsburg likely has the highest concentration of awful new buildings in the city. The neighborhood has lots of things going for it, but architecture has not been one of them. However, just north of Kiss + Cathcart's noteworthy Bushwick Inlet Park is a cluster of development that finally flaunts the design creativity for which the borough has become renowned. Centered around the Walentas' Wythe Hotel, four exciting new hotels and office buildings are in the works. Tallest of them all, and farthest along, is the 21-story, 250-foot William Vale Hotel between North 12th and North 13th Streets. The striking pile of structural acrobatics topped off last fall and recently launched their website with a handful of new renderings.

Art Nerd New York’s Top Event Picks for the Week,10/22-10/28

This month, meet Detroit's art power-house 1xRun before they finish their New York residency at two great takeover events at Reed Space and at my show "Calm Before the Storm." Focus your art gaze south at FiDi's World Trade Gallery, or head to Dark Victoriana for a history-meets-Halloweeny experience. The Aperture Foundation has their annual extravaganza at Terminal 5, and Michael Arenella gives us a time machine of Old New York at the classic Algonquin Hotel. The Wythe Hotel will host a screening of "Notorious Mr. Bout" followed by cocktails and live music. Finish it off by donning your best nautical-inspired gear and grab a cocktail at Sailors, Sirens and Sea Monsters, a closing party for "Calm Before the Storm"—hosted by me!

Art Nerd New York’s Top Event Picks for the Week, 6/11-6/17

This week I invite you to enjoy a free glass of wine while getting to know my curatorial side at the Roger Smith Hotel in Midtown. A shameless self-promotion, I'm excited to bring the work of Mark John Smith before the eyes of 47th Street. If you don't feel like meeting me, you can still catch Smith's work along with his colleagues on Rivington Street, or sample an interactive experience at the Park Avenue Armory. This week you can also catch a sample of short films about street dancing (What time is it? IT'S SHOW TIME!), or gear up on the joys of tech and design at the Hudson 3D fest in Lower Manhattan. Saturday, get outside and celebrate street art in Astoria, or take Van Alen-led tours of Central Park.

Architect Morris Adjmi’s NYC Industrial Revolution – How One Architect Dares to Be Different

Have you ever seen an interesting building and wondered if it was old, new, or somewhere in between? If so, there's a good chance you were looking at one of Morris Adjmi's creations. This is the brilliance of the architect--his buildings focus on the fundamentals of design, blending in with their historic surroundings, but still showcasing subtle, modern touches that make them unique. While Adjmi's contemporaries seem to be in a race to build the tallest, glassiest building in town, he has become the go-to architect for downtown developers thanks to his utilitarian- and industrial-influenced designs. After opening his own firm MA in 1997, Adjmi gained permanent notoriety with the Scholastic Building in SoHo, a 2001 project he collaborated on with Pritzker Prize winner Aldo Rossi. It was the first example of new construction in the SoHo Cast-Iron Historic District, and architecture Paul Goldberger said it was "a building that will teach generations of architects the proper way to respond to historic contexts."
