You could say this unusual house at 4675 Tibbett Avenue in the Fieldston section of Riverdale in the Bronx is the opposite of a cookie-cutter home. Its current owners, a textile designer who has worked for Martha Stewart and a noted contemporary artist, renovated the property themselves, giving their creative turn to its hand-carved stairs, hand-crafted kitchen cabinets, stained-glass windows, and hidden doors. Asking $1,800,000, the home mixes art and comfort, including cozy perks like an artist studio in its lofty garret.

Rooms are gracefully framed with curved wood beams. On the main floor, the living room features a gas fireplace and views of the verdant yard through walls of casement windows.

The kitchen introduces hand-carved millwork and quirky, crafty details. Overall there’s a charming farmhouse vibe; on closer inspection, individual details stand out in every surface and finish.

The surrounding grounds offer landscaped gardens, a trellis and climbing ivy. A stone patio invites al fresco dining and gathering.

Hand-carved wood paneling and window frames continue on every floor. Creative details–like a wide window seat with a garden view–make each space a unique refuge within the home.

The primary bedroom offers a wall of closets concealed in bespoke wood paneling. The en-suite bath is a study in dramatic color, with a hammered brass sink.

Two more spacious bedrooms have bathrooms with artisan details. Windows bring in sunlight while providing a hint of the greenery surrounding the home.

On the home’s top floor, through a concealed door, a fabulous loft atelier awaits. High, beamed cathedral ceilings feature massive skylights to flood the space with light. There’s space up here for an artists’ room with a cutting table as well as sleeping space.

The home’s lowest level offers radiant heated slate floors beneath studio and laundry facilities, storage closets, and wine storage space. The property also offers a two-car garage.

The home’s exterior is no less a canvas for the designers’ creativity. Subdued slate-hued accents frame its doors and windows, while stone stairs and walls highlight its history and authenticity.
