This one-of-a-kind dwelling at 8200 Narrows Avenue in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn is anything but cookie-cutter basic. Known as the Gingerbread House, this cute-enough-to-eat Hobbit-esque home is an American Arts and Crafts-style design by architect James Sarsfield Kennedy. Built for shipping mogul Howard Jones in 1918, the home was described as “the most magnificent residence in all of New York City.” According to Brownstoner, the home was last listed in 2017 for $9 million. It’s currently asking $8,750,000.
Sitting on an acre of land within view of the neighborhood’s waterfront vistas, the house was built in the style of an old English cottage, with an organic, wavy roofline and rubble stone walls beneath multi-hued asphalt shingles.
Inside, the 12-room house is finished in English oak. Well-kept architectural elements include hand-carved wainscoting and marble mantels, hand-painted coffered ceilings, and unique stained glass doors and panels. Mahogany and cherry floors can be found in the living, dining, and music rooms.
A beautiful office/study is an all-season retreat, with a fireplace and windows that overlook the verdant surroundings. The six-bedroom home offers a large and lovely primary suite with walk-in closets, a dressing room, and a fireplace flanked by two balconies and a sitting room.
You won’t find too many homes with a fountain room! Just outside, you’ll find patios, balconies, and outdoor spaces of every size on every level.
The home’s lower level has space for a theater or a gym. Another perk: A three-car garage with an elegant courtyard. The home is surrounded by landscaped grounds, paths, and gardens, with–as the listing adds–enough room for a pool.
