Thanks to a 2019 street co-naming, it’s well known that Chris Wallace, better known as Notorious B.I.G. or Biggie Smalls, grew up in an apartment at 226 St. James Place in Clinton Hill. The late rapper’s childhood home was a three-bedroom unit on the third floor, and now, the unit just below it has hit the market for $1.2 million. Like Biggie’s apartment, it’s been fully renovated and features a lovely bay window, pretty moldings, and a renovated kitchen. It also has three bedrooms and totals 1,121 square feet.
Throughout the home, you’ll find original hardwood floors in excellent condition, custom crown and panel moldings, and high ceilings. The street-facing living room sits behind the aforementioned bay window and gets lots of natural light. A small windowed home office is located off this room.
For some, the only downside to this apartment may be the layout; the dining room and kitchen are located down the hallway towards the rear of the unit. But this affords the dining room a sunny space with modern beamed ceilings and direct access to the kitchen, which features granite countertops, custom cabinets, and lots of prep space.
One of the bedrooms is off the kitchen at the back of the building.
The second bedroom and bathroom are off the hallway on the other side of the dining room.
And finally, the primary bedroom is just off the living room. It has a large window and ample closet space.
The eight-unit building is located on a lovely block within the Clinton Hill Historic District. It has a 25-year tax abatement with eight years remaining.
Biggie Smalls’ one-time apartment was on the rental market a couple of years ago for $4,000 a month. And just last month, the Fort Greene home where he lived in 1994 with Faith Evans hit the market for $1.7 million.
