This stately, detached house sits at the corner of Stratford Road and Hinckley Place, right in the heart of the Prospect Park South Historic District, an area known for its concentration of Victorian-era homes. Built in 1905 by prolific Brooklyn architect Benjamin Driesler, 170 Stratford Road is a seven-bedroom, three-and-a-half bathroom residence that sprawls over nearly 4,000 square feet. Filled with classic architectural details inside and out, the property is now on the market seeking $2.495 million.
The LPC designation report notes the structure’s defining asymmetry and states the “handsome shingled residence” is “one of Driesler’s finest.” The three-story home has a wraparound porch, a gambrel roof, and a two-story turret on the northeast corner. The report describes Driesler’s design as falling into the Free Classical style, a mix of classic details that together “contribute to the structure’s pleasing irregularity.”
The first floor was designed to entertain and is comprised of a living room, a formal dining room, a breakfast room, and a kitchen. A large entrance foyer leads into the living room through a columned partition. There are sunny bay windows and three stained glass accents in the living room. French pocket doors lead into the dining room, which also features bay windows, alongside coffered ceilings, a fireplace, and two built-in china cabinets.
The kitchen could use some upgrades but it’s large and has a separate breakfast area adjacent to it, facing the back of the house through another set of bay windows.
There are four bedrooms on the second floor, including a master suite open to the turret. The third floor includes three additional bedrooms and a large library. The basement has a half bath, an office/recreation space, and additional storage.
The home sits on a 6,000 square-foot lot and includes a private driveway and two-car garage in the back.
