It’s always a nice reminder that you can get a slice of suburban living without leaving the city, and this Dutch Colonial charmer in Prospect Park South is the perfect example. Just listed for $3,875,000, the seven-bedroom house has the ideal combination of preserved interiors and modern upgrades. But what really makes it stand out is the “enchanted forest” in the back. The huge outdoor space has meandering pathways shaded by tree canopies, a pond and waterfall, and several seating areas and planted gardens.

The entry hall is dripping with wood paneling, complemented by original parquet floors and leaded glass doors. The center hall stair has been refinished, but its balusters and handrails are original.

The woodwork continues to the left in the dining room, which boasts built-in custom-lit corner cabinets that give the room a rounded shape and the first of five wood-burning fireplaces.

On the other side of the entry hall is the bright, large living room, which has enough room for three separate seating areas. There is another fireplace here, this one with an oversized mantle.

Continuing past the living room is an equally bright den.

In the back is the completely updated kitchen, which retains its historic charm through exposed brick walls. In addition to the four-seat breakfast bar/island, there’s plenty of space for a casual dining area. The kitchen is so large that there are several different zones, and cabinet space is beyond plentiful.

There’s another rear staircase off the kitchen that leads to the second and third floors, where there are up to seven bedrooms, some of which can easily be configured as a study, office, etc. The oversized master suite is on the second floor. It has a lovely fireplace, a walk-in closet, enough room for a seating area, and a private sunroom that overlooks the back garden. The master bath has a double spa shower, soaking tub, vanity, and toilet alcove.

There are three more bedrooms on this floor, one of which is currently configured as a den. It has yet another fireplace, as well as beamed ceilings, a reading alcove, and a private terrace. The second floor also has two more full bathrooms, a laundry area, and a storage alcove.

Up on the third floor, there are three more bedrooms, a full bathroom, and a very large walk-in cedar closet. As the listing suggests, this could be a perfect au pair suite.

The finished basement has even more space for recreation or storage, and there’s a half bathroom and a sunken home gym.

The backyard is accessed from a wrap-around patio or the kitchen. The brick patio space is shaded by a romantic, vine-covered pergola. According to the listing, “the engineered porous brick surface prevents rainwater from pooling and allows it to collect in a storage tank that irrigates the entire rear property and feeds the backyard water features.”

Meandering bluestone paths lead to the pond/waterfall, where there is a second patio.

There’s a separate area for a playground-like playhouse, complete with a climbing feature. The house also has a driveway that leads to a two-car garage and a concrete pad for cars to turn around.
