Four-Floor Stunner with a ‘Secret Garden’ Asks $11,000 a Month in Fort Greene
Here is Brooklyn brownstone living at its finest. The historic 1880s townhouse at 139 South Oxford Street, located in the very brownstone-heavy neighborhood of Fort Greene, is a good blend of historic details and modern conveniences. It’s got a very special landscaped backyard, a renovated kitchen, and a staircase to die for. It’s split up as a two-family home, and the upper four floors are now on the rental market asking $11,000 a month. That’s nearly 3,000 square feet of living space, with four bedrooms, two full bathrooms, two half bathrooms and even additional basement storage! That’s a lot of brownstone goodness right there.
This rental’s parlor floor is really the star of the show, as it features a grand mahogany center staircase. The rear parlor room also opens up onto a deck and the private garden. Other historic details include the original plaster moldings, four fireplaces with carved marble mantels—two of which are wood-burning—hardwood floors throughout, and shelving built-ins. Big windows facing South Oxford Street bring in lots of light to the front of the parlor.
The second floor holds the kitchen and modest dining room. The open kitchen’s been recently renovated, now with Caesarstone counters, exposed brick and upscale stainless steel appliances.
The mahogany staircase—can you tell it’s our favorite detail of the house?—s just as gorgeous throughout the upper floors.
The third and fourth floors holds the bedrooms and a full bathroom. There’s also a washer and dryer on the fourth floor. It’s hard not to dream about living in a rental with so much space.
A rambling patio from the parlor floor leads down to this private backyard, which is definitely giving off a “Secret Garden” vibe. The listing says it’s extra deep — there’s even a pathway leading you back into the trees. This is not your everyday garden when it comes to Brooklyn townhouses, this is definitely special. We just wish there were more photos so we knew where it could take us!
