Located in Pound Ridge, a quaint town in northeastern Westchester just an hour’s drive from NYC, this sprawling estate set on nearly six acres is asking $1,250,000 (h/t Curbed). The New York Times wrote of Pound Ridge’s “wooded slopes, streams and lakes and 19th-century stone walls,” all of which create a “bucolic feel” that this home at 39 Old Snake Hill Road also embodies. Originally an 1860s barn, the listing tells us that the property was converted by Vito Fosella, a student of Frank Lloyd Wright, into a charming mid-century residence “ideal for weekend or year-round living.”
According to the listing, in the 3,049-square-foot, four-bedroom main home “Mid Century Modern design elements blend with original stone construction and hand-hewn beams.” In the kitchen, brick floors and a brick oven surround remain from the home’s early days; reclaimed furniture adds to the historic feel, while an iron spiral staircase brings in some industrial flair.
The wooden beams and walls are on full display in the main living room, where a central, double-height brick fireplace anchors the space. The mezzanine and floor-to-ceiling glass windows/doors appear to be part of the modern update.
Upstairs, the mid-century feel comes to life in the fully windowed dining area and the bedroom, which is highlighted by peaked beamed ceilings.
The main home is accessed via a curving stone staircase set alongside some of the site’s natural outcroppings.
Also on the property are a pool, pool house, and a garage with guest quarters above.
A private lake is part of the site, which is adjacent to land owned by the Pound Ridge Land Conservancy, meaning any new owner won’t have to worry about development nearby.
