Live inside a castle-like turret in Crown Heights for $4,400/month

January 4, 2018

A home with an incredible, well-documented history has a unit up for rent inside its turret. The townhouse in question is 1372 Dean Street in Crown Heights. The castle-like, three-story Romanesque Revival brick residence was built in 1888 for $8,000 with a slate-shingled turret. A few years back, its seller was featured in the New York Times–she had bought the property in 1983 for $66,000 and then sold it to an investor for $1.32 million in 2013. It has since been converted to rental apartments.

The townhouse has made incredible transformations as Crown Heights has morphed from farmland to a 19th-century society hub, then a home for middle-class black families after World War II, and more recently a destination for young professionals and investors. It was originally built as a single-family for Francis T. Kimball, a banker from Boston, and his wife.

Over the years it was chopped up into different apartments. The layout has stayed that way, with a number or renovated rental units throughout the building. This two-bedroom, two-bathroom unit spans 1,223 square feet. In the reno, the space was outfitted with walnut hardwood flooring, Belizean wood shelving, exposed brick, custom light fixtures and an in-unit washer and dryer.

There’s an open living, dining and kitchen space. The kitchen boasts Caesarstone kitchen countertops and Maytag stainless steel appliances, plus hand-painted Moroccan tile work and a walnut island with its own sink.

The master bedroom is truly stunning, looking up into the turret’s peak. It comes with an ensuite bathroom with radiant heated floors and lots of closet space.

An open staircase takes you up to the roof deck, which offers another unique view of the home’s turret. The outdoor space was renovated with an outdoor kitchen. This special gem of a house is within walking distance to Brower Park and the Brooklyn Children’s Museum–not to mention all the other magnificent and well-preserved townhouses of the neighborhood. This one, still, remains unique because of its castle-like stature.
