Though Hungary might not be the first place that comes to mind when planning one’s escape from 2025 America, Gawker founder Nick Denton is leaving his Soho home base and relocating his family to Europe, with precisely that destination in mind, according to New York magazine. European health care might be superior, but it will be hard to top his sexy loft at 76 Crosby Street. Asking $3,500,000, the two-bedroom loft condo is at the epicenter of downtown Manhattan living.

While its old-school appeal (complete with a lack of elevator) is evident, the home has plenty of condo convenience, doorman included. The main event at this 2,152-square-foot home is a dramatic great room with cast-iron columns, original wood beams and ceilings nearly 13 feet high; eight-foot-tall loft windows and floor-to-ceiling bookshelves wrap the space. Twenty-first-century perks include central AC and a washer/dryer.

A sleek black-and-steel kitchen is open to the great room, with plenty of space for dining. Highlights include a six-burner Viking cooktop, double sinks, a SubZero refrigerator and wine cooler, a Miele wall oven, stainless worktops, and an island that seats five.

A bedroom off the living room–perfect as a media room or den–has use of a full bathroom just around the corner. Across the loft, away from the main space, the primary suite has two large walk-in closets and a private reading nook. The Japanese-inspired teak-clad ensuite bath has both a walk-in shower and an oversized soaking tub.

Denton, who purchased the home in 2004 for $1.87 million, says of Soho loft living: “My favorite room is the nook, opposite the bedroom in the master suite. It’s where I do my work and watch the trucks make deliveries with the kids on Crosby Street.”

He compares the neighborhood to past surroundings in London and Paris: “Croissants for breakfast from the French bakery across the way, business meetings in the red-leather booths in Balthazar, and Equinox just a block away–better than any hotel gym. Five stars!”
