Classic Upper East Side cocktail bar Bemelmans to finally reopen in May

One of New York City's most storied bars will reopen next month following a year-long shutdown. Located inside the historic Carlyle Hotel on the Upper East Side, Bemelmans Bar will welcome guests back to the iconic mural-covered watering hole on May 11, the first time since last March. And for the first time in its nearly 75-year history, Bemelmans is now accepting online reservations.

Bette Midler sells palatial Upper East Side penthouse last listed for $50M

Bette Midler has sold her massive Upper East Side penthouse, which was last listed for $50 million. The entertainer and her husband, Martin von Haselberg, first bought the 14-room triplex at 1125 Fifth Avenue in the late 1990s, according to the Wall Street Journal, which first reported the sale. Taking up the top three levels of the Emery Roth-designed co-op, the residence measures 7,000 square feet with an additional 3,000 square feet of outdoor terraces.

The Met’s latest rooftop installation features a swaying Big Bird overlooking Central Park

A 26-foot-tall moving sculpture featuring the Sesame Street character Big Bird has been installed atop the Metropolitan Museum of Art as part of the museum's annual Roof Garden Commission series. Created by Philadelphia-based artist Alex Da Corte, As Long as the Sun Lasts exhibition includes a blue-feathered Big Bird sitting on a floating crescent moon and holding a ladder, gazing out at Central Park and the massive towers that dot the skyline. The exhibition will open at the Iris and B. Gerald Cantor Roof Garden on April 16 and be on view through October 31.

As was first reported by the Post, celebrity chef Eric Ripert has put his Upper East Side condo on the market for $3,495,000.The French chef and cookbook author is best known for his three-Michelin-starred restaurant Le Bernardin, located in Midtown. He and his wife Sandra bought the three-bedroom home at 515 East 72nd Street in 2010 for $2,850,000. Sandra is now one of the agents selling the apartment for Douglas Elliman. She told the Post, "Eric designed the open kitchen, and it features an island where everyone gathers and watches while he cooks, especially on holidays like Thanksgiving and Christmas."

The Boathouse in Central Park will reopen on March 29

After speculation that Central Park's beloved Loeb Boathouse would be closed for good, West Side Rag reports that the venue will reopen on March 29 for lunch, brunch, and private events. Even their famous rowboats rentals will be available. The boathouse announced the news on Instagram, the first time they've posted since last April. The lakeside restaurant and event venue has been in business since 1954 and is not only an iconic spot for New Yorkers, but it's been featured in films like When Harry Met Sally and 27 Dresses.

And though it retains this historic pedigree from the street, inside it's been modernized with opulent finishes and a classicaly elegant style. According to the Post, the home, which is on the market for $18 million, is owned by Sandi Feinberg, widow of the late philanthropist Herbert Feinberg. They bought the five-story house in 1989 for $2.5 million and then spent three years on a renovation that included adding a 46-foot-long saltwater lap pool and hot tub on the lower level, as well as spiffing up the garden and roof deck.

According to city property records, actress Candice Bergen spent $2,150,000 on an Upper East Side co-op at 825 Fifth Avenue. The apartment last sold in 2007 for $1,600,000; it had previously been owned by eccentric real estate developer and political figure Abraham Hirschfeld, who passed away in 2005. In December, Ms. Bergen put her Hamptons home on the market for $18 million.

The Frick Collection’s temporary home in Madison Avenue’s Breuer building is opening next month

A little over two years ago, the Frick Collection announced it would take over Madison Avenue's famous Breuer building from the Metropolitan Museum of Art. Up until 2016, the brutalist landmark was home to the Whitney Museum of American Art, but when the Whitney moved to its new High Line building, the Met took it over as a contemporary wing. The new move allows the Met to ease the burden of some of its debt while providing a temporary home for the Frick while its permanent home--a Gilded Age mansion on Fifth Avenue-undergoes a renovation. The Frick Madison will open at 25-percent capacity on March 18.
