$348M restoration of Riverside Park is part of largest investment in 90 years

The city announced this week plans to provide $348 million in funding for the rehabilitation of major infrastructure in Riverside Park, marking one of the largest investments at the waterfront park since the 1930s. The project restores the "overbuild," a series of bridge structures built over the Amtrak tunnels between West 72nd and West 123rd Streets. The deteriorated structure has damaged pathways and affected the park's usability, according to the city.

Those who work at cultural institutions, as well as public housing residents, will be prioritized at a new COVID-19 vaccine site opening on Friday at the Upper West Side's American Museum of Natural History. Mayor de Blasio made the announcement in a press conference this morning, noting that "literally you can get vaccinated below the blue whale," who is now sporting a giant bandaid. In a show of support, the Museum will give complimentary general admission on a future visit for a group of four to anyone who receives their vaccine at the site.

Affordable housing lottery opens for 79 units on the Upper West Side, from $456/month

In the Manhattan Valley section of the Upper West Side, an affordable housing lottery has just launched for New Yorkers earning 30 or 60 percent of the area median income. The units range from $456/month one-bedrooms to $1,510/month three-bedrooms. The building, known as WSFSSH at West 108, is located at 145 West 108th Street, and it's the first in a two-phase project from the West Side Federation For Senior and Supportive Housing (WSFSSH). When the development was first announced in 2016, it was contested by local residents for the fact that it would replace affordable, city-owned parking garages and a transitional shelter.

Condo sales relaunch at 200 Amsterdam after court delays

Sales have resumed at 200 Amsterdam Avenue, the 52-story Upper West Side tower that has faced a series of legal challenges since 2017. Developed in partnership by SJP Properties and Mitsui Fudosan, the building is 668 feet tall, the tallest in the neighborhood. The tower nearly lost that superlative after a judge in February 2020 ruled that as many as 20 floors may have to be chopped from the building for violating zoning rules. But last month, the New York State Appellate Court reversed that decision and declared the developer's permit valid.

Later that evening, hundreds of candles will be lit around the Revson Fountain to honor the roughly 30,000 New Yorkers lost to the pandemic.

And one of the city's most beloved cultural institutions is leading the way. Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts last week announced a new initiative that will transform its 16-acre campus into 10 new outdoor performance venues. Launching on April 7, "Restart Stages" will feature free and low-cost events by cultural organizations and community partners hailing from all five boroughs, in addition to Lincoln Center's resident companies.

New photos of the public park at the Waterline Square development were released this week, showing off the nearly three acres of green space designed by MNLA. Positioned in the middle of the three glassy Upper West Side towers, Waterline Square Park offers a tucked-away oasis for the community, along with a huge playground and unique water features. When it officially opened this summer, the park hosted a number of socially-distanced events including live music performances and yoga classes.

New renderings of the Upper West Side condo tower that replaced one of New York City's oldest synagogues were revealed this week. In 2017, Congregation Shaare Zedek sold its synagogue at 212 West 93rd Street to developers Leyton Properties and Landsea Homes. Some local residents and preservation groups opposed the sale and pushed for the nearly 100-year-old building to be landmarked, but their efforts fell short. Now as the project nears completion, we're getting an updated preview of the 14-story mixed-use condo designed by Eran Chen's ODA New York and a peek inside its 20 luxury residences, 70 percent of which will have private outdoor space.

Yesterday, the fifth phase of Riverside Park South opened to the public. The 4.6-acre area stretches from West 65th to 68th Streets and includes new paths, stairs, and plazas; a playground and swings; lawns; sand volleyball courts; and a dog run. As West Side Rag tells us, the $21.1 million project--which was completed with federal, state, and private funds--was originally planned to open in 2018.

New Target stores in Columbus Circle and Hell’s Kitchen are now open

After construction and COVID-related delays, Target has officially opened three new small-format stores on the Upper West Side, Hell's Kitchen, and Staten Island. The store at 61st and Broadway at Columbus Circle was first announced two years ago and was planned to open in 2019. Likewise, the store on 10th Avenue and 45th Street was first announced four years ago and was also planned to open in 2019. The store in the North Shore section of Staten Island is only delayed by six months.
