Whitney Museum to give free admission to all visitors 25 and under

The Whitney Museum of American Art will begin offering free admission for all visitors 25 and under starting in mid-December. The new program builds upon the museum's free admission on Fridays and the second Sunday of every month, which launched in January.

The Whitney Museum announces free admission on Friday nights, second Sundays

The Whitney Museum of American Art will offer free admission and special programming on certain days every month next year. Beginning January 12, the Meatpacking District art museum will drop its "pay-what-you-wish" system on Fridays from 5 p.m. to 10 p.m. and on the second Sunday of every month. During those times, admission will be free for all visitors.

Explore NYC from Edward Hopper’s perspective with this new digital map

On Monday, the Whitney Museum launched an interactive digital map marking 20 locations across New York City that legendary artist Edward Hopper painted during his career. The map provides a side-by-side comparison of Hopper's portrayal and a photo of the location as it looks today taken from the same perspective, including places like the Manhattan Bridge, Washington Square Park, and Roosevelt Island. All of the paintings featured on the map are currently on display at the museum as part of the new exhibition, Edward Hopper's New York, which explores the life and work of the artist through his relationship with the city.

The first survey of Puerto Rican art in a major U.S. museum in 50 years will open in NYC

An exhibition opening at the Whitney Museum of American Art this month is the first survey of contemporary Puerto Rican art presented in a major United States museum in almost 50 years. Titled "no existe un mundo poshuracán: Puerto Rican Art in the Wake of Hurricane Maria," the exhibit is made up of work from 20 intergenerational artists who explore the years since Hurricane Maria devastated the island in 2017 and respond to the political, social, and environmental factors connected to the disaster.

New exhibit at the Whitney offers a comprehensive look at Edward Hopper’s life and work in NYC

A new exhibition that explores the work of artist Edward Hopper and his relationship with New York City will open at the Whitney Museum this fall. Hopper, who called Greenwich Village home from 1913 until his death in 1967, uniquely captured an evolving city at a time of historic development and population growth. On view at the museum starting in October, Edward Hopper's New York will feature more than 200 paintings, watercolors, prints, and drawings by Hopper, along with additional archival materials like photographs and notebooks.

Meet the women who founded New York City’s modern and contemporary art museums

When the first Armory Show came to New York City in 1913, it marked the dawn of Modernism in America, displaying work by Van Gogh, Gauguin, Cezanne, Picasso, Matisse, and Duchamp for the very first time. Not only did female art patrons provide 80 percent of the funding for the show, but since that time, women have continued to be the central champions of American modern and contemporary art. It was Abby Aldrich Rockefeller who founded MoMA; Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney the Whitney; Hilla von Rebay the Guggenheim; Aileen Osborn Webb the Museum of Art and Design; and Marcia Tucker the New Museum. Details revealed for the Whitney Museum’s upcoming Warhol exhibit

“To humanize Warhol and get people to actually look at what he made is not as easy as it might sound.” Donna De Salvo, deputy director and senior curator at the Whitney Museum of American Art had this to say to the New York Times among other newly-released details on what to expect in “Andy Warhol — From A to B and Back Again,” opening on November 12th. The show will be the first Warhol retrospective offered by a United States museum since 1989. De Salvo is referring to the myth of Warhol, in his lifetime and even more so after it.

Whitney Museum will host NYC’s first Andy Warhol retrospective in 30 years

Andy Warhol, one of New York's most iconic artists, is getting the spotlight at an upcoming retrospective in the Whitney Museum. The museum announced it's planning the city’s first comprehensive Warhol retrospective in nearly 30 years--and they hope, according to ArtNet, that it'll change your opinion of the most famed Pop artist in the world. Donna De Salvo, the curator organizing the exhibition, told ArtNet that "I’ve always felt there was so much attention given to the persona of Warhol that we had trouble looking at the work—and that’s what this exhibition does." This showcasing of his work is scheduled to happen in November of 2018.
