Politician Peter Kostmayer Buys $2M Clinton Hill Brownstone
Democratic politician Peter H. Kostmayer, best known for his seven terms in the U.S. House of Representatives and for his infamous 1992 divorce during which his ex wife publicly endorsed his Republican opponent, bought a lovely Clinton Hill townhouse for $2,144,000, according to city records.
Located at 14 Saint James Place, the four-story Italianate brownstone recently underwent a gut renovation that combines historic details like crown moldings and mantles in every room with modern conveniences like a perfect-for-entertaining backyard and high-end appliances.
The combination of dark hardwood floors and clean, white walls, matched with the soaring ceilings and abundance of picture molding, creates a polished, elegant feel as soon as you walk in the door to the parlor floor. The open living space, highlighted by a bay with floor-to-ceiling windows, opens to a steel balcony overlooking the rear yard.
On the garden level is the bright, open kitchen, which features top-of-the-line appliances and has room for a formal dining space and separate seating area.
The kitchen exits onto the spectacular backyard, complete with a beautiful blue stone patio, built-in Viking grill, and even a built-in hot tub with a fountain backsplash.
The second floor has two large bedrooms, a full-sized laundry room, and a bathroom with a huge, marble-tiled shower. The top floor of the home boasts the sunny master bedroom and bathroom, as well as a second bedroom. Plus, there’s additional storage in the cellar.
Kostmayer, who’s now the CEO of Citizens Committee for New York City, previously resided in a Greenwich Village pad that’s quite similar in its classic appearance to his new Clinton Hill buy.
