Leasing launches at Queens’ second tallest tower, with rentals priced from $2,950/month

Leasing officially kicked off this week at the second tallest building in Queens, a 71-story rental in Long Island City. Located at 27-29 Queens Plaza North, the building, dubbed Sven, has 958 apartments, with a mix of studios to three-bedroom units priced from $2,950/month. Originally expected to become the borough's tallest building when plans were announced, the tower was surpassed by the Skyline Tower in 2019. Not only do the rentals come with stunning skyline views, but the building is the first in New York City to offer "Spireworks," an app that lets users change the colors of lights at iconic city skyscrapers.

NYC unveils new memorial in Flushing honoring African and Native American burial ground

Hundreds of New Yorkers, mostly African and Native American residents, who were buried in Flushing at least 150 years ago were finally honored with a memorial this week. The city's Parks Department and Queens officials on Tuesday cut the ribbon on a new commemorative plaza at the Olde Towne of Flushing Burial Ground. The site, located north of 46th Avenue between 164th and 165th Streets, was used as a public burial ground starting as early as 1840, with over 1,000 individuals buried there until 1898. A new memorial wall includes the name of the sacred site, a brief history, and 318 recorded names of those buried there, and the new plaza has a butterfly garden and surrounding benches.

270 affordable apartments available at a luxury Long Island City tower on the East River

Waterfront luxury living in New York City doesn’t have to be out of reach. Located on the East River in Hunter’s Point South, Gotham Point is a mixed-use complex with over 1,100 apartments, 75 percent of which are priced below the market rate. Applications are now being accepted for 270 rent-stabilized apartments at the Long Island City development’s South tower. The building is open to New Yorkers with a wide range of household income levels, between 30 percent and 165 percent of the area median income (AMI), or between $15,806 and $244,200 annually. That means a single person who earns between $15,806 and $25,090 annually would pay $738/month for a studio and a four-person household with an income range of between $126,686 and $196,845 would pay $3,580/month for a three-bedroom.

Cuomo’s $2.1B LaGuardia AirTrain project is halted

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey announced Tuesday that it would be putting the brakes on any further development of the AirTrain, the proposed 1.5-mile elevated rail that would run between the airport and the eastern Queens neighborhood of Willets Point, with a connection to the subway and Long Island Rail Road. The project was a top priority for former Gov. Andrew Cuomo. His successor, Gov. Kathy Hochul, has called for a review of alternatives to the project in response to opposition by community groups and local officials who have criticized its environmental review process, its impact on the surrounding community, and a dearth of alternatives being discussed.

Historic Neir’s Tavern honored with street co-naming in Queens

After a rent increase and the coronavirus pandemic left the fate of Neir's Tavern in question, the history of the nearly 192-year-old Queens establishment will be preserved forever following a street co-naming ceremony Saturday. A massive development with over 1,000 units of housing is coming to Long Island City's Hunter's Point South neighborhood. Developed by the Gotham Organization and RiseBoro Community Partnership, Gotham Point includes two towers and a total of 1,132 residences, 75 percent of which are affordable. The project is part of a broader plan first announced in 2013 by former Mayor Michael Bloomberg to redevelop nine parcels of land in Hunter's Point South and bring 5,000 new apartments to the neighborhood. Queens’ Cambria Heights could gain two Tudor-filled historic districts

The Landmarks Preservation Commission on Tuesday voted to calendar two historic districts in the Queens neighborhood of Cambria Heights. The proposed 222nd Street Historic District and the 227th Street Historic District contain a total of 96 intact Tudor Revival rowhouses that incorporate the whimsical Storybook style. One of several prosperous Black communities in southeastern Queens, Cambria Heights is home to many single-family homes, but the two blocks considered for landmark status stand out for their architectural integrity and cohesiveness, according to the commission.

Cuomo’s $2.1B AirTrain to LaGuardia gets federal approval

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey can move forward with its proposal to build a $2.1 billion AirTrain to LaGuardia Airport, the Federal Aviation Administration announced on Tuesday. The 1.5-mile elevated rail would run between the airport and the eastern Queens neighborhood of Willets Point, with a connection to the subway and Long Island Rail Road. The agency's final decision was delayed last month after community groups and elected officials raised concerns about the review process and the logistics of building the AirTrain.

Target will open first Long Island City location at One Court Square

View from last year of One Court Square; Map data © 2020 Google One Court Square, the former Citigroup Building, was long the tallest tower in Queens until it was overtaken by the residential Skyline Tower. In addition to its prominence in the skyline, the building is also known for its failed deal with Amazon. The retailer had planned to lease one million square feet of space at the tower as part of its former HQ2 plan for Long Island City. But, as the Post first reported, One Court Square has inked a deal with another major retailer--Target. The store will take 31,000 square feet at the tower, with no exact opening date set.

2021 U.S. Open will welcome back fans at 100% capacity

The U.S. Open this year will allow spectators at 100 percent capacity throughout the two-week tournament in Queens, a year after fans could not attend the event because of the pandemic.
