Robert Stuart Fills His West Village Condo With Thoughtful Details for a Past Reimagined
This gorgeous, rustic West Village condo belongs to designer Robert Stuart from Rob Stuart Interiors. Located on Perry Street, his city oasis was used as a warehouse in the 1980s, so was in desperate need of some personality when he moved in. With his own home as his canvas, the designer took advantage of the massively high ceilings, wood burning fireplace, and panoramic NYC views. Before renovations were installed, the space was stripped down to its bare bones and every corner and detail was put in place to design a home of the past reimagined.
The home is now filled with design details big and small that tell a story spanning decades of history and personal style. “I pulled out every design trick I knew when designing this space. There are little surprises tucked away everywhere,” Stuart explains.
A favorite detail is the rolling library ladder that allows the home’s avid reader the ability to utilize and reach typically unusable storage.
The living room walls are adorned with a light birch texture and a curated collection of fine art, romantically lit with a vintage gallery light.
With a plethora of beautiful objects, the designer had to figure out ways to feature different collections without creating visual clutter. As a solution he meticulously organized niches, shelving, and cabinets to add to the home’s old world charm.
In Stuart’s own words: “The master bathroom feels perfectly vintage and the faux alligator walls of the guest bathroom are quintessentially masculine. The home office is like working in a ‘cabinet of natural curiosities’ as there is always something interesting happening.”
“Ultimately, I wanted the result to feel like a piece of a great turn of the century English home. We love being here, it’s very grounding,” he says.
