Lucky for him, this "Lord of the Rings" superfan is a civil engineer who works in construction, so when he had the urge to build his very own hobbit house in the Dutchess County town of Pawling, it wasn't just a pipe dream. After spending more than six years constructing the residence, and even building it to Passive House standards, Jim Castigan has put the home on the market for $795,000, according to Gothamist. In addition to being built right into a hillside, the home shares other details with its Tolkien inspiration BagEnd, such as faux circular door and geometric patterns etched into the interior concrete.

George and Amal Clooney’s supposed illegal Soho rental hits the market for $16M

In April, sources said that George and Amal Clooney were renting a duplex apartment at 116 Sullivan Street. They also said that the owner of the 19th-century Soho townhouse, Richard Fertig, converted this apartment into an "illegal hotel" for "transient use." Likely in light of the city's new Airbnb law that requires the company to disclose the names and addresses of hosts, Fertig has listed the entire six-story home for $16 million.

A private island in Long Island Sound known as Rogers Island just got a new owner, who paid $21.5 million for the seven-acre property off the Connecticut coast. The sellers, a couple of "island collectors" by the name of Christine and Edmund Stoecklein, are bound for the West Coast, according to Mansion Global, unloading their gorgeously landscaped land mass and even lovelier Tudor mansion for less than the $22.3 million they paid for it in 2003, to an anonymous buyer.

Bought for $156K in ’79, soccer legend Pelé’s East Hampton beach house sells for $2.85M

Brazilian soccer legend Pelé's former Hamptons beach house recently sold, the New York Post reports. The seven-bedroom home at 156 Waterhole Road in Springs changed hands for $2.85 million, below its most recent ask of $3.25 million. The famous footballer won three World Cups during his career, which ran from the 1950s to the 1970s when he played for the New York Cosmos. Pelé–born Edson Arantes do Nascimento–bought the waterfront ranch house for $156,000 in 1979 and expanded it into its two-story, 3,400-square-foot form. Located on a landscaped acre next to Clearwater Beach and marina, the unassuming-on-the-outside house with sleek, recently renovated interiors also includes a pool, an outdoor shower and deeded access to the beach. Pelé, who is 77, lives in Brazil.

Scarlett Johansson and Colin Jost have looking at beachfront properties in the Hamptons. According to the New York Post, Johansson and her man recently checked out a five-bedroom condo at Gurney’s in Montauk, in the resort's new 26-unit residential section which opened in 2016. The pair toured a pretty property priced at $7.95 million (reduced from $8.49 million, though it's still the most expensive of the eight available residences).

The newly engaged duo reportedly moved into a $16 million condo at 520 West 28th Street, the High Line-strapping building designed by late starchitect Zaha Hadid. TMZ reported on Wednesday that the couple snagged a 4,000-square-foot five-bedroom in the futuristic West Chelsea apartment. While it's not yet known whether they bought the multi-million dollar apartment or are just renting the unit, we know Pete likes Chelsea: Sources told 6sqft he's been seen getting groceries at the Whole Foods in the neighborhood.

With $3.55M sale, Eli Manning’s condo sets Hoboken record

Eli Manning's patience trying to offload his Hoboken condo certainly paid off, as the Post reports that it's sold for $3.55 million--the biggest condo sale in the city's history. The Giants quarterback first listed the waterfront spread at the Hudson Tea Building three years ago for $5.2 million, but after failing to find any takers, he put it up as an $18,000/month rental the following spring. Manning currently lives with his wife, Abby McGrew, and their three daughters in the more suburban Summit, NJ. He also dropped $8.5 million on a beachfront Hamptons mansion last year.

George and Amal Clooney’s Soho rental is operating as an illegal transient hotel

George and Amal Clooney's rental at 116 Sullivan Street has been operating as an illegal transient hotel, according to Page Six. Richard Fertig, the owner of the 19th-century, red brick building in Soho was hit last month by the city with four violations for illegally converting the basement apartment to "transient use." Authorities say the apartment does not have mandatory fire alarms, exits or a certificate of occupancy.

Bernie Madoff’s formerly seized beachfront home in Montauk relists for $21M

Bernie Madoff's former Montauk home, seized by authorities in 2009 after the disgraced investor's Ponzi scheme fell apart, has hit the market for $21 million. The current owners of 216 Old Montauk Highway, Steven Roth, the chair of Vornado Realty Trust, and his wife Daryl, a producer for Broadway, picked up the 3,000-square-foot home in 2009 for $9.41 million. Tapping renowned designer Thierry Despont, the couple totally renovated the three-bedroom, ocean-front home, according to the Wall Street Journal. The house sits far from the road at the end of a long gated driveway and boasts a private path to the beach.

In addition to the disgraced anchorman's Sag Harbor home (one of his three Hamptons properties) Lauer's Upper East Side co-op at 133 East 64th Street is now for sale, asking $7.35 million. The four-bedroom, 11-room pad is also, as the Post points out, where the former "Today" anchor was holed up last November when he was informed of his dismissal by NBC News head Andy Lack.

Art and real estate: The new relationship that’s selling big

The architect Morris Adjmi looks to trends in art, more than in architecture, to inspire his work. “Art is more stimulating to me than the latest trends in architecture. Art is visceral and topical, it is much more immediate and it allows you to get into the zeitgeist of the time. In art, we see what is happening now, in architecture it takes a few years to show up.” More and more architects, developers, designers, and brokers believe in the powerful relationship between art and real estate. So much so, it is now understood that art sells real estate and real estate sells art. James Cavello, owner of Westwood Gallery, curated an art exhibit at 212 Fifth Avenue’s $73.8 million “Crown” penthouse with a multimillion-dollar collection of art, with works by Warhol, Rauschenberg, Cy Twombly, Robert Indiana, Charles Hinman, and Douglas Kirkland. On the relationship between art and real estate, Cavello says, “We share the same similar high net worth clients so developers and brokers look to individuals like me and my company to propose alternatives to staging the areas with furniture and drapes and, instead, work with the light and space and utilize the art as staging.” The Sotheby’s team behind 212 Fifth added that having Westwood Gallery stage art in the three-story, 10,000-square-foot unit, “Helped generate powerful awareness for Westwood Gallery with a level of visibility that is often unattainable for a stand-alone gallery.” Clearly, art and real estate have a very symbiotic relationship.
