CWB Architects Build a Musically Inspired Pavilion in the Hamptons for a Pianist Client

A former musical director/pianist from Brooklyn Heights and her historian husband contacted Dumbo-based CWB Architects to build an adjacent pavilion at their home in Quogue on Southampton. The result is the wood-clad Piano Pavilion, which echoes the owners' love for organic architecture, but makes a deliberate nod to its namesake instrument with the contour of its roof. The pavilion was made to function as a piano room and small office, but it also works as a guest room, which is important as the couple's children and six granddaughters visit almost every weekend.

Hamptons Island Could Go for $1B, Despite Being Contaminated With Foot-And-Mouth Disease

The Hamptons are increasingly a hotbed for crazy real estate offerings, from Andy Warhol's recently listed former compound now selling for $85 million to the teeny tiny trailer in Amagansett asking $1.2 million earlier this year. But now NPR reports that there's an 840-acre island just off the tip of Long Island complete with miles and miles of untouched shoreline, acres of undeveloped woods, a lighthouse and a ferry terminal that could go for as much as $1 billion when it hits the auction block. Oh, yes, and it's also contaminated with foot-and-mouth disease.

DHD Interiors Bring the Beach Back to This Hamptons Beach House

When a Manhattan couple first bought this 8,000-square-foot Hamptons home, it seemed like more of a hunting house than a beach house. Wall-mounted deer heads and paisley wallpaper outfitted the space, while dark mahogany floors sucked the light out of the rooms. But the new homeowners didn't let this turn them away. “It was a big house with unbelievable water views and we thought it would be a fantastic place to host family and friends,” the wife told luxe. “But we knew it needed some work.” The couple called in Steven Wakenshaw and Steffani Aarons of DHD Interiors, as well as landscape architect Steven Tupu, to bring out the best in their now house, but what had started out as small-scale remodeling and redecorating snowballed into an architectural intervention. Given the placement of the house on the eroding shoreline, DHD was prevented from changing the shape of house without obtaining local ordinances, which could take years to get. The homeowners wanted the house ready in time for Memorial Day, giving the team only five months to complete the task. With those restrictions, the firm decided to work with what they had to create a stylish, family-friendly beach house.

Katie Lee's newly released cookbook "Endless Summer" is all about the quintessential Hamptons lifestyle, and after one look at her stunning Water Mill estate–complete with a wine cellar and outdoor entertaining area of chefs' dreams–it's easy to see why she was inspired. The Wall Street Journal reports that the star of the Food Network's "The Kitchen," and ex-wife of Billy Joel, has listed the 6,325-square-foot, impeccably decorated (courtesy of designer Nate Berkus) home for $6.5 million. She purchased the two-acre estate for $3.5 million after splitting with Joel in 2011, so she's looking to make quite the profit.

ICRAVE Mixes Cedar and Steel to Create This Modern Hamptons Pool House

If you're spending the holiday weekend out on the Hamptons, chances are you're in for crowded beaches, bustling restaurants, and high-energy parties. But for those of us looking for something a little more low key, this contemporary pool house and spa by ICRAVE couldn't be any more perfect (well, except for the fact that we're not invited over). The designers were tasked with creating a fresh outdoor space in Amagansett where their clients could entertain, and seeing as ICRAVE is responsible for such hospitality projects as the Borgota casino's Bask by Exhale Spa and eight STK restaurants, we're not surprised that the result is so flawless. A mix of natural cedar and industrial steel, the pool house is a modern oasis, highlighted by the central pool.

Hexagonal Hamptons Beach Bungalow Has Quirky Checkered Floors and Beamed Ceilings

It's not all Real Housewives of NYC and mega-mansions out on the Hamptons. In fact, one of the cutest houses on the island (in our humble opinion) is on the market for just $595,000. Located in East Hampton at 73 Waterhole Road, this beach bungalow stands out on the exterior for its charming hexagonal shape and on the interior for its funky hand-painted checkered floors and rustic cedar beamed ceilings. And if that wasn't enough, the house sits on a large lot adjacent to a preserve and near a private residents-only beach and marina.

$3M Hamptons Home Was Designed by Robert A.M. Stern in an Unorthodox Shingle Style

Starchitect Robert A.M. Stern certainly made headlines last week, with floorplans for two of his supertall billionaire's row towers coming to light (520 Park Avenue and 220 Central Park South). And it's these type of ground- and record-breaking urban projects that we've come to associate with the architect, who favors stately and classic buildings over the zig-zagging glass towers of his peers. But long before the days of 15 Central Park West, Stern was beginning his architecture career with much humbler projects, like this Hamptons home, an unorthodox take on the shingle style that he completed just a few years after architecture school. The 3,000-square-foot, postmodern vacation house is on the market for $2.95 million, offering architecture buffs the chance to own a piece of history.

Live Like Hamptons Royalty in the $4.3M Red-Brick Castle

Yes, this Southampton Village home is palatial, but "castle" is not being used here as just an adjective; the historic home is actually titled "the Castle." And it's a fair moniker, as the red-brick residence is covered in romantic ivy, features a dreamy turret and sits on 43 acres. Famed Manhattan interior designer William Sofield of Studio Sofield purchased the estate in 1999 for $830,000 and spent over a decade restoring its original Arts and Crafts style. He has now listed the house, which was built in 1911 and is listed on the National Register of Historic Places, for $4.3 million.

Ryall Porter Sheridan’s Hamptons Pavilion is Clad in Spanish Cedar

It must be hard to come up with a design to complement an existing log house, but Ryall Porter Sheridan succeeded with their Spanish cedar-clad Hamptons Pavilion. Interestingly, this material is neither Spanish nor cedar, but rather from an evergreen tree in the mahogany family. It's also the traditional material used for making cigar boxes. But despite its confusing moniker, the paneling creates a structure that is both modern and organically connected to the surrounding landscape.

Live in Billy Joel’s Hamptons Home for Just $250K?

How would you like to live in the Piano Man’s Hamptons home? Well, for all you Billy Joel fans, your moment in the sun has come, because for just $250,000 you can have his Hamptons home for all of… the month of August. It appears that after experiencing a somewhat turbulent journey with this home—the house has been on and off the market several times since 2009—Joel and his pad are parting ways yet again, and this time he’s spiced up his offer a bit. Not only has the price dropped from an astronomical $23.5 million to a slightly less astronomical $19.95 million, but the singer/songwriter has apparently opened his eyes to the possibility of renting… however pricey. Baby steps. We’ve all seen this phenomenon when a seller has such a personal attachment to a home that they can’t seem to price it reasonably? Is this one of those instances? Or is the Sagaponack home worth the cost? You be the judge.
