Chelsea Loft Designed by Award-Winning SYSTEMarchitects Wants $2M

This two-bedroom live/work loft comes from 249 West 29th Street, a prewar Chelsea co-op built in 1929. The building may be older, but this particular loft, now on the market for $2.15 million, is quite modern. It was designed by SYSTEMarchitects, a prominent firm that's won awards everywhere from the American Institute of Architects to the Museum of Modern Art. They also designed this other Chelsea loft, distinguished by a wood boat hull that was built out in the mezzanine. There's nothing quite as striking in this loft, although it does have a very interesting design element in the master bedroom.

Modern, Massive Loft in Prewar Flatiron Building Asks $7.895 Million

Space, volume and abundant light—those are the three virtues of this Flatiron loft apartment at 260 Park Avenue, according to its listing. When it comes down to it, we'd have to agree; it's hard to argue with 3,287 square feet of open loft space that includes a "great room" that spans more than 46 feet, 12 enormous windows covering multiple exposures, and a master bedroom that comes with a double walk-in closet that's probably the size of some studio apartments. This condo sits within an eight-story prewar building that long served as the headquarters of the United Federation of Teachers. Well-known economist Richard Thaler purchased it in 2012 for $5.94 million and he's now trying to unload it for $7.895 million.

My 1,400sqft: Painter Stephen Hall Brings Us Into His Greenwich Village Loft and Studio

Since being transformed into homes for artists in the 1970s, Westbeth Artists' Housing has hosted some of New York City's most brilliant creatives. And long-time resident and painter Stephen Hall most certainly falls into that set, helping to fill the residence's walls with thought-provoking ideas for the last 17 years. Born in Aberdeen, Scotland, Stephen came to New York back in 1978 and began exhibiting his work in the East Village in the early '80s. Today, his colorful pop-surrealist masterpieces can be found in collections all across the globe, with his paintings now commanding between $5,000-$20,000 a piece. He's also dreamt up art for major motion pictures, music videos and magazines. Curious to see the madness and magic behind his Stephen's off-kilter works—which he describes as "paintings [that] confront us with complex conundrums for which each of many possible solutions may very well tell us as much about ourselves as about the subject at hand"—6sqft recently paid a visit to his duplex loft, a family home that mixes mid-century modern design with pops of color and familiar but fantastical forms.

Facebook Co-Founder Gets $8.5M for Massive and Masculine Soho Loft

Facebook co-founder Chris Hughes and husband Sean Eldridge, financier and former Democratic congressional candidate, make quite the power couple. So it comes as no surprise that the dapper duo got $8.5 million, just below the $8.75 million asking price, for their bespoke Soho loft at 30 Crosby Street. They bought the home for $4.5 million in 2010, and then undertook a serious renovation that resulted in a masculine but elegant interior. It hit the market back in August, and now the Observer reports that the massive 4,100-square-foot pad has been picked up by Helliot Property Holdings Inc.

Colorful, Classic and Costly—This Full-Floor Flatiron Rental Loft Asks $9,800/Month

To be honest, we're finding this 2,500 square-foot full-floor rental loft in a pre-war Flatiron District building at 4 West 22nd Street super exciting... It's got a somehow just-right combination of gorgeous loft bones, creative-cool decor, lots and lots of space, and two actual bedrooms (that are decent-sized) plus possibly room to create a temporary third, actual closets, and a kitchen that looks like it can't wait to cook, party, or both at once; the neighborhood is a fortunate confluence of everything newly-trendy in Manhattan. The rent, it seems, has been assigned accordingly at $9,800—the owners are banking on plenty of people getting just as excited.

Live/Work Loft Serviced by the Original Freight Elevator Asks $1.575 Million in Clinton Hill

We'll just come out and say it: this Clinton Hill loft is really cool. The 2,074-square-foot space, lined with big windows that face both north and south, takes up the entire third floor of the live-work cooperative at 93 Lexington Avenue. You'll still find the original industrial details of the former warehouse building throughout the apartment, including an incredible copper-doored elevator. Another freight elevator, also an original detail of the building, opens directly into the apartment. It last sold in 2012 for $880,000 (slightly over the ask of $855,000) and now it's on the market for much more, $1.575 million.

Behind a Boring Facade Are Cool, Lofty Apartments in Greenpoint

The four-story townhouse at 106 Dupont Street in Greenpoint is nothing to write home about. In fact, it's straight up boring, and it'd be fair to assume the interior was, too. But the building, which was gut renovated in 2006, actually holds some cool apartments inside. It was separated into three units: a super lofty, top-floor duplex with three bedrooms; a middle floor-through apartment with two bedrooms; and a first-floor, floor-through unit with two bedrooms and a private garden. The listing is marketing this as a good investment for "an end-user who wants to collect great rental income," as it's currently occupied by tenants. But they'll have to cough up a lot of cash first: the property is asking $3.78 million.

Massive Williamsburg Studio, Asking $3,750 a Month, Is Called a ‘Loft Lover’s Dream’

Are you the type of New Yorker who dreams of great apartments after you've gone to bed? Maybe you've dreamt up a loft that looks like this, with wide open space, strikingly high ceilings, a private terrace and roof deck with views of the Williamsburg Bridge (Every NYC apartment worth dreaming about has outdoor space!). The listing, anyway, claims this Williamsburg studio at 138 Broadway is the stuff of dreams, and we have to say that it does look dreamy in the photos -- especially the 20-by-22-foot main space that's being used as the living and bedroom. The apartment comes from a well-known Williamsburg building, the Smith Gray, a cast-iron design built in 1882 for the Smith and Gray Department Store Building. It was converted to condos in 2002.

This former warehouse building, constructed in 1915 at 138 Baxter Street, is right in the heart of Little Italy, just a block away from the Italian restaurants lining Mulberry Street. At some point, the seven-story building was converted into a six-unit apartment building, and this one is now on the rental market for $7,250 a month. It's a two-bedroom apartment with super high 14-foot ceilings, big windows and a nice open living, dining and kitchen area–it spans 1,200 square feet total. It's got all the loft bases covered, with some fun and funky interior decoration added on top. There have also been some sleek renovations in the kitchen and bathrooms.

Lofty Duplex Carved Out of an UES Limestone Mansion Asks $3.975 Million

35 East 68th Street, located between Park and Madison Avenues on the Upper East Side, is one of those buildings that is not to be messed with. It's a 13,000-square-foot Beaux Arts mansion designed as a private residence for Harvard-trained physician Dr. Edward Kellogg and grain fortune heiress Mary Dows by Carrere & Hastings–the same architecture firm behind the New York Public Library. Since the now-landmarked building was completed in 1901, it has maintained its elegant, carved limestone facade. The interior, however, is a different story. Somewhere along the line the mansion was converted into a co-op apartment building, split into eight units. Seven of the eight co-ops were on the market this February for $34 million, but it looks like a sale never happened. Now this three-bedroom duplex is up for sale on its own.

For celebrity cred, Academy Award-winning director Barry Levinson ("Rain Man," "Diner," "Bugsy") owns a loft two floors below.

A Wood Boat Hull Makes Up the Mezzanine of This Colorful Chelsea Loft

There is an abundance of cool lofts in Chelsea, and we love exploring the interiors of these impressive open spaces. The best part is that the design of each individual unit is often left up to the tenants, resulting in some truly unique layouts. However, it's not so often that we see two units with different owners following they same program, but for the families living in these two adjacent apartments it was the perfect solution. Together they hired SYSTEMarchitects to create two bedrooms in each of their narrow spaces, as well as access to an exterior deck that maximizes natural light and air. Plus, both spaces' 11-foot ceilings gave the design team enough room to create a sleeping and storage mezzanine, which was inspired by a wood boat hull.

Lofty Duplex in Greenpoint Comes With Double Height Ceilings and a Parking Space

149 Huron Street, a 30-unit Greenpoint condo building, was constructed in 2007 and is dominated by big windows and balconies on its facade. There is one unit up for sale in the building, a duplex, and it's asking $1.2 million. Over 985 square feet and two floors you'll find a big, towering window, lots of open space, a flexible floorplan and modern finishes. This is one of the priciest apartments in the entire building, and the history of its price tag says a lot about how much Greenpoint has changed since 2007. The unit sold in 2009 for $560,037 and then was listed in 2012 for $629,000. It looks like it never sold back then, but now it's trying its luck past the $1 million mark.

For $3.5M This Sweet Nolita Loft Doesn’t Give Up Condo Comforts

Named for its envy-inspiring spot in downtown Manhattan's chic Nolita neighborhood–where Soho and Little Italy meet the colorful edges of Chinatown, the Solita building at 161 Grand Street is a classic 1911 loft building that was converted to condos in 2001. Among its 18 rarely-available half- and full-floor units–one of which belonged to Sofia Coppola and hubby Thomas Mars until they sold it in 2012–is this updated and colorful 1,831 square-foot two-bedroom loft, which just arrived on the market for $3.5 million. With a private elevator, central air, package-fetching super, video intercom and rooftop terrace, there's no need to trade condo comfort for loft bones. But the price–about a million more than its (most recent) 2012 sale price–more likely reflects the tiny collection of impossibly cool boutique shopping, dining and residential blocks that have long been among the city's most coveted while retaining at least some of their charming, ever-so-slightly gritty old New York feel.

This loft comes from the the former Doehler Die Casting Factory, located at 505 Court Street in Carroll Gardens, Brooklyn. The building was constructed in 1913 and the loft was first renovated in the '80s, but since then it's been transformed into something really special. That's because it has undergone a top-to-bottom renovation by SABO Project, who stripped the entire space to reveal the building's historic details and then added a sleek, modern touch.
