Jersey City is bringing back July 4th fireworks to the Hudson River this year

Viewable from the New York and New Jersey waterfronts, a July 4th fireworks display will return to the Hudson River this year. Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop made the announcement that the Freedom and Fireworks event will take place after being canceled in 2020 due to Covid. "Since we revived Jersey City’s Fourth of July event in 2013, we’ve become a destination for the annual celebration, and I think it’s important to restore those traditions for residents and visitors to have something to look forward to," said Mayor Fulop.

Paris’ famous Pompidou Center will open its first North American outpost in Jersey City

When The Centre Pompidou (Pompidou Center in English) opened in Paris in 1977, it was the first collection of modern and contemporary art in Europe. Famous as much for its inside-out building designed by Renzo Piano as for its artwork, the museum has in recent years opened satellite locations in Málaga, Spain, Brussels, and Shanghai. And come 2024, they'll open their first North American outpost in Jersey City. According to a press release, the location "will launch a strong partnership aiming to reinvent, develop and activate Jersey City Journal Square’s iconic Pathside Building."

Any Bravo fans looking for a summer rental? Luann de Lesseps, star of "The Real Housewives of New York," is renting her waterfront Sag Harbor home for the months of July and August, as the New York Post first reported. "I want to travel after the pandemic," de Lesseps, who also added she is also getting ready for her cabaret shows scheduled for this fall, told the newspaper. The Hamptons property sits on Sag Harbor Cove and boasts water views and a private dock. According to the listing, renters will pay $100,000 for the month of July, $110,000 for August, or $200,000 for both months.

A new design was unveiled last week for Marsha P. Johnson State Park in Williamsburg following backlash regarding the state's original proposal. During the local community board's Parks and Waterfront Committee meeting last Thursday, Starr Whitehouse Landscape Architects and Planners presented a revised plan that incorporates more greenery and plantings to the Brooklyn waterfront site and ditches the rainbow-striped plastic mural that opponents criticized, as first reported by Brooklyn Paper.

$348M restoration of Riverside Park is part of largest investment in 90 years

The city announced this week plans to provide $348 million in funding for the rehabilitation of major infrastructure in Riverside Park, marking one of the largest investments at the waterfront park since the 1930s. The project restores the "overbuild," a series of bridge structures built over the Amtrak tunnels between West 72nd and West 123rd Streets. The deteriorated structure has damaged pathways and affected the park's usability, according to the city.

Landmarks approves scaled-down South Street Seaport mixed-use project

The Landmarks Preservation Commission on Tuesday voted to approve plans for a debated mixed-use project and a new museum in the South Street Seaport. The Howard Hughes Corporation presented a revised proposal for 250 Water Street that includes one 324-foot tower to be built on a parking lot instead of the two 470-foot structures originally proposed in January. The project also involves constructing a new building for the South Street Seaport Museum at 89 South Street.

Luxury Jersey City rental The Beach has tons of outdoor space overlooking the skyline

Developer LeFrak began work on Newport, the 600-acre planned community on the Jersey City waterfront, in 1986, and today they're launching leasing at a new luxury rental within the neighborhood. The Beach is a 336-unit project that not only offers residences with views of the entire Manhattan skyline, but has several outdoor spaces including a landscaped waterfront courtyard with grilling stations and fire pits, an outdoor pool and sun deck overlooking Hudson Yards, and a sixth-floor roof deck with multiple seating areas. Effort continues to restore New York’s Titanic Memorial Lighthouse to its original 1913 condition

The campaign to landmark and restore the Titanic Memorial Lighthouse, a monument in New York City built in 1913 to honor those who died aboard the Titanic, continues. Designed by Warren and Wetmore, the architecture firm behind Grand Central Terminal, the 60-foot-tall lighthouse originally sat atop the roof of the Seamen's Church Institute and featured a working time ball that dropped down the pole each day, along with a green light. Preservationists are now raising funds that would help restore the lighthouse, currently located at the entrance to the South Street Seaport, to its original condition.

A penthouse at New Jersey's tallest residential building has sold for $3.9 million, setting a record for the priciest condo closing in Jersey City's history. As CityRealty reported, the 2,473-square-foot home sits on the 75th floor of 99 Hudson, an 889-foot-tall tower designed by Perkins Eastman and located on the waterfront.

In recent years, the downtown Jersey City skyline has expanded in ways no one could have imagined 20 years ago. And a new mega-development is planned for an area previously untouched, just west of Liberty State Park and the Liberty Landing Marina. Known as The Cove JC, the 13-acre, mixed-use project is envisioned as a global hub for life science, tech, and medicine. Pop-up pools proposed for NYC’s open streets this summer

Last year, New York City public beaches and pools did not open until July because of the coronavirus pandemic. This year, city comptroller and mayoral candidate Scott Stringer wants to make sure New Yorkers from all boroughs can enjoy the summer season by making pools, beaches, and the city's waterfront more accessible. In a proposal announced on Tuesday, Stringer called on the city to bring a series of pop-up pools to Open Streets and vacant lots in neighborhoods that lack green space.

Smorgasburg to open new flea market at former Hester Street Fair site

Outdoor food market operator Smorgasburg announced on Wednesday that it will open a new flea market at a location already familiar to most New Yorkers. Hester Flea will set up shop on the Lower East Side at Hester and Essex Streets, the same place where the Hester Street Fair operated for the last decade, organizers said in an email. As Curbed first reported, the Seward Park Co-op board did not renew the longtime LES fair's lease after their agreement ended last year.
