150-name waitlist opens for modern affordable rentals next to Cathedral of St. John the Divine

Photo courtesy of CityRealty Known as Enclave at the Cathedral, this pair of 13- and 15-story towers adjacent to the landmarked Cathedral of St. John the Divine (the world's largest cathedral, to be exact) in Morningside Heights was built in 2016. At the time, a housing lottery opened for the 428-unit rental's 87 affordable apartments. Four years later, a waiting list has come online that will randomly select 150 applicants earning 60 percent of the area median income for future vacancies in these units, which range from $888/month studios to $1,427/month two-bedrooms.

Domino Park puts social-distancing circles in place to control crowds

After continued overcrowding despite the city's social distancing mandates, Domino Park has taken a unique approach to control crowds. Over the weekend, the Williamsburg waterfront park implemented painted white circles to delineate the appropriate spacing for persons or groups. As Greenpointers first noticed, photos on social media seem to show people sticking within their circles and even waiting nearby for circles to open up.

NYC opens 12 more miles of open streets

This brings the total to nearly 21 miles since Mayor de Blasio first announced that he'd be opening up 40 miles of streets to pedestrians by the end of the month, with an ultimate goal of 100 miles throughout the current COVID crisis. In his press conference this morning, the mayor announced the third round of open streets totaling 11.7 miles would be opening tomorrow, along with 9.2 miles of protected bike lanes by the end of May. Some of the new open streets include those in Hudson Yards, the first on the Upper West Side and in Long Island City, and those adjacent to seven more parks in Brooklyn.

NYC to deploy 1,000+ additional ‘social-distancing ambassadors’ after racial disparity in summonses

Roughly 2,300 city employees will be dispatched across the five boroughs to enforce social distancing rules, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced on Sunday. The so-called "social distancing ambassadors" will be stationed in public places to remind people to keep six feet from others and to hand out free face coverings. The mayor said New Yorkers have overwhelmingly done the right thing throughout the current health crisis, but reminders and enforcement are still needed. "We still need the ability to enforce these rules when needed and only when needed," de Blasio said during a press briefing.

Applications are currently being accepted for 19 middle-income units at a new rental building in Brooklyn. Located a few blocks from the Barclays Center and the many restaurants and bars that sit on the border of Prospect Heights and Clinton Hill, 555 Waverly Avenue is an eight-story building with 190 total units. New Yorkers earning 130 percent of the area median income can apply for the apartments, which include $2,228/month studios, $2,346/month one-bedrooms, and $2,830/month two-bedrooms.

NYC to limit capacity at Hudson River Park and Domino Park after crowd issues

The city will limit the number of people allowed in Hudson River Park in Manhattan and Domino Park in Brooklyn to prevent overcrowding. "We know we had some parks last weekend that were more crowded than they should have been," Mayor Bill de Blasio said during a press briefing on Friday. The news comes after a photo of a packed Christopher Street Pier, showing no visitors wearing masks, went viral last Saturday on Twitter.

Second set of NYC open streets launches tomorrow in collaboration with local BIDs

After finally getting on board with the idea of opening New York City streets to pedestrians, Mayor de Blasio closed the first wave of streets to cars earlier this week. This totaled 4.5 miles inside parks and 2.7 miles adjacent to parks; eventually, the city will open up to 100 miles of streets. The next group will open up tomorrow, which includes 1.5 miles in Manhattan, Brooklyn, and the Bronx done in collaboration with Business Improvement Districts (BIDs), as well as 0.4 miles in Jackson Heights, Queens.

First wave of NYC open streets plan to start next week

The first phase of the city's plan to close up to 100 miles of streets to cars will start on Monday, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced on Friday. The first streets to open to pedestrians include 4.5 miles inside parks and 2.7 miles adjacent to parks, according to the mayor. "The goal here is more space, more social distancing," de Blasio said.

Family drops $27M on eight Waterline Square apartments as ‘safe’ investment during coronavirus

A family from Peru has paid nearly $27 million for eight units at the new three-tower luxury complex Waterline Square on the Upper West Side, the Wall Street Journal reported on Wednesday. The buyers went into contract and closed on the all-cash deal on the same day, Douglas Elliman agent Maria Velazquez told the newspaper. Velazquez said the family who bought the condo units see it as an investment, opting to put their money into real estate instead of a bank during the coronavirus pandemic. "They felt their money was safer in an apartment in New York than in a bank," she said.

$45M oceanfront estate is the priciest sale in the Hamptons since 2016

Mansion Global reports that the sprawling oceanfront estate at 26 and 32 Windmill Lane in East Hampton has closed for $45 million, as per sources close to the deal. Though they can't confirm the final sale price, Douglas Elliman does tell us that it's the most expensive sale in the Hamptons since 2016. The 6.7-acre property, which was listed for $60 million in July and most recently for $55 million, was built in 1989 for former Union Pacific president and chairman James Evans. There's a massive main house with beautiful beachy interiors and tons of outdoor space including a 50-foot pool, as well as a separate guest house.
