The dramatic Chelsea duplex owned by actress Susan Sarandon for nearly 30 years has hit the market for $7.9 million. Located at 147 West 15th Street within the luxury co-op building La Fabrique, the massive 6,000-square-foot apartment boasts a flexible layout with six bedrooms, four exposures, and a gallery foyer on the eighth floor. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal, the Academy Award winner, a native of Queens, said she plans to downsize to a smaller pad nearby and has no intention of leaving the city. “I’ve always been a New Yorker and I’ll continue to be a New Yorker,” Sarandon said.
Sarandon and her former partner Tim Robbins bought the apartment together in 1991 and after their split in 2011, she took full ownership of the condo. The couple had combined two units in the building, which was constructed in 1923 and converted into condos in 1987, by a staircase.
The loft measures roughly 6,000 square feet and features outdoor space in the form of a terrace and balcony. Currently set up as a five-bedroom loft with a corner library, the layout is adaptable enough to make the space into another bedroom. The bright palatial living areas boast stunning views of the World Trade Center and the Empire State Building.
The open kitchen offers plenty of room to entertain with enough space for a huge dining room table. Sarandon told the WSJ that she hosted many parties and guests throughout her three decades living at the apartment. As the listing describes, the “colossal” living space was used by her children who put on plays and dance recitals, with the curved bleacher-like stairs perfect for an audience.
The corner office features custom built-in shelves and views looking east, with the Con Ed Building and Union Square Park visible. And a cozy reading nook features a wood-burning fireplace.
The spacious master bedroom features its own balcony, dressing room, and an ensuite windowed bathroom with a soaking tub. The bright cobalt-blue-painted bathroom is called the “Academy Award” bath as it holds all of a Sarandon’s awards, including her Oscar for Dead Man Walking, according to the WSJ.
Accessed by a key-locked elevator and a custom staircase, the entire seventh floor is dedicated to guests, with another den, second kitchen, three bedrooms, two baths, and a terrace.
“It’s the kind of home you’d expect a Grande Dame actress to live in,” Nikki Filed, the Sotheby’s International Realty agent who has the listing with Mara Flash Blum, told the newspaper. “It’s dramatic. It’s like a studio set that happens to be her home.”
