John McEnroe gets another grand slam, sells Southampton beach estate for $11.25M

We can't imagine he'll be having any public outbursts over the $7 million profit he just made on his Southampton estate. The Observer reports that confrontational tennis legend John McEnroe, along with his wife, musician Patty Smyth, has sold his beach-front house for $11.25 million, 18 years after buying it for $4.2 million. Not surprisingly, the home on Squabble Lane (how's that for ironic?) has a full-size Har-Tru tennis court and a gym, as well as a heated pool, private beach access, and the 8,000-square-foot mansion.

East Hampton’s ‘Driftwood House’ employs traditional Japanese charred wood techniques

On a half-acre lot perched 18 feet above Gardiner's Bay in East Hampton sits a unique site, shielded by neighboring waterfront homes on its east and west sides, but completely open in front to the bay. With these two extremes as their inspiration, MB Architecture designed the Driftwood House, using both reclaimed wood from the property's previous home and charred cypress prepared using the traditional Japanese Shou-Sugi-Ban technique. The result is a sustainable residence that "[weaves] the line of the horizon through its spaces, slowly unveiling the views, with glimpses through layers and framed transparencies."

This striking Bridgehampton home was designed with reclaimed wood from an old Brooklyn factory

This Bridgehampton estate combines the rustic rural farmhouse with the grittiness of a Williamsburg loft. The guest home, dubbed the WE Guest House, boasts an open 3,000-square-foot layout, double-height windows and insulated stucco walls. The main property, called the WE House, utilized reclaimed wood from a Brooklyn factory, board concrete and casement windows to make a strong design statement.

$1.25M Hamptons home was built in 1639 with wood from a ship

This East Hamptons home comes with serious history. Not only was it built way back in 1639, but the facade comes from the wood of a ship and the structure is still held together by the original wood pegs. According to the broker, the East Hampton Historical Society has actually verified the house history as well as the ship's numbered wood, the oldest part of the home. (The wood is numbered because, in the event of a shipwreck, it could be put back together.) They can also trace the property's family history all the way back to its earliest owners. Now, on the market for $1.25 million, it's ready for its next chapter.

A unique facade of vertical louvers made from twisted canvas strips let marine breezes pass through them to cool the interiors and let in natural light without the harsh afternoon glares.

Talk about a living arrangement that's holier than thou. This chapel is part of the former Edwin Denison Morgan III estate in Old Westbury, Long Island. In addition to the aforementioned 6.3 acre gated North Haven estate, Lauer and his wife Annette also currently own Brightside Farms, a 40-acre tract of land in Water Mill on which they have built a world-class equestrian facility and a 25-acre estate in the Water Mill area that includes an 8,000-square-foot 6-bedroom mansion decorated by Muriel Brandolini; the latter is also currently on the market for $17 million.
