Own a glass-box Hamptons home designed by One World Trade Center’s structural engineer

Jeff Smilow is the Executive Vice President of buildings at WSP|Parsons Brinckerhoff, and perhaps his greatest accomplishment has been serving as the structural engineer for One World Trade Center. His streamlined, rhythmic approach is also seen at this contemporary glass and steel home in East Hampton, which he completed just this year. Now on the market for $5.5 million, the transparent residence best exemplifies Smilow's handiwork on its first floor, where the 5,000-square-foot open plan is surrounded by floor-to-ceiling windows, completely unencumbered by columns.

Spend the holidays in the infamous 28-room Grey Gardens estate

Though now this 28-room mansion looks like your typical East Hampton property, it was once a decrepit, crumbling, cat-infested, overgrown horror that came to be known as the Grey Gardens Estate, based on the title of the 1975 documentary that immortalized the isolated and impoverished lives of its residents Edith wing Bouvier Beale and her daughter Edith Bouvier Beale (the aunt and cousin to Jackie O). Back in September 2015, 6sqft shared that the now-restored 1.7-acre estate was up for rent asking $175,000 a year (except for August, when the owners presumably holiday). The Post also reports that there's shorter-term options for the upcoming holidays--$7,500 for Thanksgiving week and $12,500 the week of Christmas.

Even better, the sprawling four-acre property comes with 327 feet of beachfront that overlooks the harbor, yachts, sailboats, and open bay of the Hamptons.

Wood-Clad Long Island home by Bates Masi takes inspiration from Quaker architecture

Simplicity, humility and inner focus were key to early Quaker architecture, principles that also inspired Bates Masi + Architects' latest project. The beautiful Underhill home sits in Matinecock, a village within Oyster Bay, Long Island, on the site of an old Quaker settlement. It's composed of a series of interconnected wooden pavilions topped by angled gabled roofs, "each one focused inward on its own garden courtyard instead of out to the surrounding neighbors," according to the firm.

Bates Masi + Architects focused on acoustics for this Hamptons house design

At this Hamptons home, the owners gained a true luxury once it was ready to live in: silence. Project architects Bates Masi paid particular attention to the architectural acoustics in order to limit the noise from the nearby town of Amagansett. Their focus defined nearly every detail of the interior, as well as the materials used. The result is a truly stunning beach house with sustainable, built-to-last materials that contribute to a unique acoustic character as you move through each living space.

The ‘Summer White House’ of the Hamptons could be yours for $14.2M

It's no easy feat to make it to the White House, but the Hampton's alternative is available to anybody willing to stomach the cost of renting or buying it. 20 Union Street, a three-story Victorian mansion built in 1796, was considered the "Summer White House" for President Chester A. Arthur (he also owned a townhouse in Murray Hill). Since the former president vacationed there, it has been throughly renovated into a modern, luxurious Hamptons pad. The six-bedroom, four-and-a-half bathroom home is up for both sale and rent, asking $14.2 million or $480,000 per year. (The price to rent between Memorial and Labor Day is $390,000.)

Naomi Watts and Liev Schreiber Swap Cute Amagansett Cottage for $5.4M Montauk Beachside Retreat

The hot Hollywood couple may be downsizing as far as the number of bedrooms they'll have, but they’re getting ocean views from everywhere in the house. As 6sqft reported, Watts and Schreiber put their stylish six-bedroom Amagansett cottage on the market for $6 million back in December. Now, 27East reports they’ve purchased a four-bedroom house further out on the Island in boho-trendy Montauk. The 3,600-square-foot home, for which the award-winning actors paid $5.4 million, sits on a half-acre across the street from the beach and abuts a 100-acre nature preserve. Similar to their former retreat, there's a heated gunite pool and pool house, a chef’s kitchen and garage parking.

$4.4M ‘Eco-Luxurious’ Beach House in Amagansett Sits Next to a 216-Acre Nature Reserve

The Hamptons is known for its incredible mansions, but this unique beach house was actually inspired by a simple barn. The architects, Studio Zung, reinterpreted the traditional wooden barns of the area to create this modern and luxurious property, which sits between the Atlantic Ocean and a sprawling nature reserve. One of the biggest design considerations was making the home eco-friendly, so it's outfitted with everything from salvaged pine beams to an eco-smart saline swimming pool. Dubbed Atelier 216, this drool-worthy property could be yours for $4.425 million.

The firm designed a modern but still contextual addition for the 6,000-square-foot home, with large steel casement windows and doors to best capture the surrounding views. While one end of the home looks like a traditional beach cottage, the other side is much bolder, brighter and all-around impressive.

This Montauk Beach House, Reminiscent of the Salk Institute, Blends Naturally With the Shore

This beach house, designed on the shores of Montauk by John Pawson, is anything but flashy. Instead, the goal was to blend the building with its surroundings--"to engage naturally with the flow of the dune," as Pawson put it. It's almost reminiscent of the Salk Institute, a complex designed by Louis Kahn in La Jolla, California that powerfully engages with the Pacific Ocean. Here, the home barely peeks above all the beachfront brush surrounding the Atlantic. And from the interior, numerous decks look like they're extending naturally into the sand. This is the type of getaway that'll really make you feel one with nature.

Dreamy Hamptons Vacation Home Designed by Mid-Century Architect Andrew Geller Asks $2M

Vacation homes don't get much better than this. The abode at 375 Brick Kiln Road in the Hamptons was designed by the Mid-century architect Andrew Geller. He was known for designing creative homes across Long Island that utilize low-cost materials in unconventional ways, according to Curbed Hamptons, and he created this one--known as the Elizabeth Reese house--in 1963. The striking $2.2 million beach cottage, featuring triangular windows with projecting flaps, sits on a beautiful five acres of land. It comes with a tennis court, swimming pool and an impressive stone fireplace, making this one of the coolest vacation pads we've come across.

Unpretentious Beach House by Space Exploration Is a Perfect Retreat For a Creative City Pair

Understandably busy creative couple Elisa Restrepo, co-founder of the luxurious minimalist shoe label Dieppa Restrepo, and restaurateur Dylan Dodd (Karasu, Walter’s, Walter Foods, and Barrio Chino) turned to Brooklyn architects Space Exploration to transform their three-story split-level house in the laid-back (though lately less so) surfing village of Montauk. 6sqft has featured the firm's work before, and they've done another fine job creating an un-fussy and livable space with white and pale woods, earthy textiles and plenty of natural light. The house underwent a full gut remodel, including extensive landscaping, which took a year, but looks completely worth the effort.

This Montauk Beach House by Ghislaine Viñas Could Be in Malibu or Miami

It's definitely beach season, and it's refreshing to get a peek at homes filled with ocean breezes. The playful and colorful interiors created by Ghislaine Viñas Interior Design have transformed city lofts and townhouses–but her paintbox palette works just as well, it turns out, by the sea. From the outside, this Montauk getaway for a New York City family is a classic East End beach house, but Ghislaine's irreverent way of mixing color and mid-20th-century modern and eclectic styles gives this laid-back home a vibe that's also part Malibu hideaway, part Miami chic.

Matt Lauer Paid $36M for Richard Gere’s Hamptons Estate

Richard Gere has been trying to sell his 6.3-acre North Haven compound since 2013, when it was first listed for $65 million. The "Today" news anchor will be getting a waterfront pool and pond, basketball court, 240-foot-long deep-water dock, island-inspired tea house, and a private beach, along with the 12-bedroom main house. Buy Christie Brinkley’s 21-Acre Hamptons Estate for $30M

Newsday reports that Christie Brinkley is looking to unload her massive, 20-acre Bridgehampton estate for $29.5 million. Known as Tower Hill for its 50-foot turret, the home was built in 1891 and was scooped up by the supermodel in 1998. Her ex-husband, architect Peter Cook, restored the home, but it's been on and off the market with no luck since 2002. It was originally listed for $25 million, but after the couple's split in 2007, Brinkley re-listed it for $30 million. The main gambrel-style house, which was built with "475 tons of local rock," has 11 bedrooms, and there's also an art studio, gym, pool, tennis court, greenhouse conservatory, four-car heated garage, and four-bedroom guesthouse.

New Affordable Housing in the Hamptons Will Be for Those Earning Less Than $106,200

A new plan to bring affordable housing to one of the Hampton's priciest stretches has residents up in arms, reports The Post. The town of Amagansett is planning to erect a below-market rate complex that would add 12 two-bedroom and 12 three-bedroom homes to the area, with rents ranging from just $1,100 up to $2,300 a month. The development would mingle with the estates and New York City escapes of the rich and famous, including that of Naomi Watts, Jerry Seinfeld, Gwenyth Paltrow and Scarlett Johansson—just to hame a few. Incredibly, a family of four could be earning as much as $106,200 annually (120 percent of the AMI) to qualify.

Angular Design Dominates this East Hampton Home Renovation by Maziar Behrooz

This dynamic East Hamptons home is located on the East End of Long Island in Wainscott, New York. The owners of the property originally purchased it 20 years ago when it was just a small structure. After a few expansions and renovations over a decade, in 2008, they decided they wanted an even bigger home and enlisted the help of architect Maziar Behrooz to build anew. The owners, who are originally from France, fell in love with the natural beauty of Long Island and wanted to reimagine their property without regard to its organic confines. In response to this request, architectural plans were created to include a dramatic 9,500-square-foot extension with asymmetrical triangles and a linear orientation that unifies the pool, grounds and garden.

CWB Architects Build a Musically Inspired Pavilion in the Hamptons for a Pianist Client

A former musical director/pianist from Brooklyn Heights and her historian husband contacted Dumbo-based CWB Architects to build an adjacent pavilion at their home in Quogue on Southampton. The result is the wood-clad Piano Pavilion, which echoes the owners' love for organic architecture, but makes a deliberate nod to its namesake instrument with the contour of its roof. The pavilion was made to function as a piano room and small office, but it also works as a guest room, which is important as the couple's children and six granddaughters visit almost every weekend.
