East Harlem rental The Smile is noteworthy for a lot of things–its design by Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG), a fitness center with spa-like amenities, and the rooftop complete with a plunge pool, multiple whirlpools, and an outdoor movie theater. And now, a handful of its units have further bragging rights, as they’ve been outfitted with a modular furniture system by Bumblebee Spaces. Using a robotic system that’s affixed to the ceiling, the bed, desk, and storage elements can all be easily summoned or stowed-away into the ceiling. The unit is actually asking $3,550 a month, but with four months free on a 16-month lease, the net effective rent is $2,662.
As a press release explains, “the modular system is built into a ceiling-mounted grid that can hold several tons of weight, allowing the furnishings to come and go when the resident needs or wants to use it.” And that’s not all. The system responds to voice commands, so you can simply ask it to do what you need, and it also uses AI to learn your routines.
The studio apartment was a perfect candidate for such a system, as it’s a compact 470 square feet. In addition to the Bumblebee components, there’s a large floor-to-ceiling closet in the living area and another two closets off the entrance. There’s also a washer/dryer closet.
The home has nine-foot ceilings, floor-to-ceiling windows, exposed concrete ceilings, and monolithic resin floors. The kitchen boasts Italian stainless steel cabinetry, a stainless steel appliance suite including a dishwasher, and under-cabinet color-changing LED lighting.
Residents of The Smile have access to a suite of amenities very rarely found in rental buildings. They include a co-working studio, game room, demo kitchen, screening room, a fitness center complete with Peloton bikes and a yoga room, and a spa that contains a dry sauna, steam room, salt room, “sensory experience showers,” and Hamam. And perhaps best of all, the Smile Rooftop Swim Club features a plunge pool with city views, several whirlpools, dining areas, an outdoor movie theater, and landscaped spaces.
