Wonderful East Village Penthouse Has a Vegetable Garden
Just this August we took a glimpse inside an adorable East Village apartment at 217 2nd Avenue with not one, but two gardens. Now, the penthouse of the same building is on the market, asking $2.8 million; and just like its neighbor, this apartment charms from start to finish.
This full-floor condo manages to seamlessly blend old-world New York with rustic touches such as wide plank pine floors, vintage oak cabinets and a “lovingly worn” marble sink. Enter the home to find the industrial chic commercial grade kitchen with a skylight and a spiral staircase, which we’ll get to later.
The kitchen opens up to the spacious dining area, which has exposed brick walls and aged built-ins. Pocket doors with etched glass connect the dining room to the living room, which boasts oversized windows, crown molding, and a marble clad fireplace.
The home has two bedrooms, but it’s immediately clear that the second bedroom gets the short end of the stick. The master has a wall of closets, tons of natural light and the home’s second wood-burning fireplace. A sumptuous spa bath and a laundry room sit right outside its door. Meanwhile, the tiny second bedroom sits alone on the other side of the apartment, adjacent to the living room (seen above) and far from the home’s second bath.
In true form for 217 2nd Avenue, this penthouse has a few surprises up its sleeve. Remember the stamped steel spiral staircase in the kitchen? Well, it leads to a lush rooftop garden filled with mature plants and a vegetable garden. And all of this is just blocks from lively Union Square. Now that’s what we call the best of both worlds.
