72nd Street B, C station to close through the fall and other weekend service changes

May 4, 2018

This weekend, the MTA is closing the first of what it specifies are “two non-adjacent subway stations” (a desperate grovel for mercy from public critique, that specification), 72nd Street and 86th Street on the B, C line. The 86th Street station will not close until June 4, and neither station will reopen until late October. Meanwhile, the usual slew of weekend service changes also awaits straphangers. Read on for the details.

No 1 trains between 137 St and 242 St – free shuttle buses provide alternate service.

2 trains replace weekend 5 service between Dyre Av E 180 St. No 2 trains between 149 St-Grand Concourse and E 180 St – free shuttle buses provide alternate service. No 2 or 3 train service between Brooklyn and Manhattan – no service at Park Place, Wall St, Clark St and Hoyt St.

5 trains replace weekend 2 service between Wakefield-241 St and E 180 St. No 5 trains between 149 St-Grand Concourse and E 180 St – free shuttle buses provide alternate service. Bronx-bound 5 trains skip 138 St-Grand Concourse.

Manhattan-bound 6 trains skip Longwood Av, E 149 St, E 143 St, Cypress Av and Brook Av.

Inwood-bound A trains skip 72, 81, 86, 96, 103 and 116 Sts. Ozone Park/Far Rockaway-bound A trains skip 155 and 135 St. 72 St, Cathedral Pkway and 163 St-Amsterdam Av are closed to all trains in both directions.

168-St bound C trains skip 72, 81, 86, 96, 103 and 116 Sts. Euclid Av-bound C trains skip 155 St and 135 St.

Jamaica Center-bound E trains run express from Queens Plaza to 71 Av and skip 75 Av and Briarwood.

No Rockaway Park Shuttle service at Broad Channel – the Shuttle will also be running approximately every 20 minutes between Rockaway Park-Beach 116 St and Beach 90 St and via the A to/from Far Rockaway-Mott Av.

Coney Island-bound D trains skip DeKalb Av, Union St, 4 Av-9 St, Prospect Av and 25 St. Norwood-bound D trains skip 182-183 Sts.

Jamaica-bound F trains skip 75 Av, Briarwood and Sutphin Blvd. No F trains between Church Av and Stillwell Av – free shuttle buses provide alternate service.

Forest Hills-bound M and R trains run express from Queens Plaza to 71 Av.

Coney Island-bound N trains run via the R from Canal St to Atlantic Av-Barclays Ctr. Coney Island-bound N trains skip Broadway and 39 Av as well as 49, 28, 23, 8 and Prince Sts.

Coney Island-bound Q trains skip 49 St, 28 St, 23 St, 8 St and Prince St.

Bay Ridge-bound R trains skip 49 St, 28 St, 23 St, 8 St and Prince St.

The J likely has scheduled work, but The Weekender tab says nothing besides “Click for details,” which possibly should have been hyperlinked, but is not. These were the service changes along the J last weekend, which are likely similar if not the same this weekend: No J trains between Marcy Av and Broadway Junction – free shuttle buses provide alternate service between Broadway Junction and Marcy Av, making all J and M stops. J service operates in two sections: between Jamaica Center and Broadway Junction and between Marcy Av and Broad St.

Per the whims of the MTA, there will probably be other problems, and the problems stated above are subject to change and worsen.
