28 ‘Little Free Libraries’ pop up at community gardens across NYC

The New York Restoration Project this week installed 28 new book-sharing boxes throughout the five boroughs. Created by Little Free Library (LFL), the boxes can be found at the city’s community gardens, 25 of which are NYRP gardens and three of which are partnered with Gardens for the City.

Every library box contains at least ten books in Scholastic’s Read in Color Book Bundle, which includes titles that touch on racism and social justice, and celebrate BIPOC, LGBTQ+, and other marginalized communities. The boxes have also been stocked with donated books from the New York Public Library’s Tompkins Square Branch.
“We are so pleased to now have Little Free Libraries in half our gardens throughout New York City. NYRP’s mission is to create equitable access to quality green spaces, and we are excited to now incorporate these book-sharing boxes to serve this mission,” Lynn B. Kelly, Executive Director of NYRP, said.
Kelly continued: “Knowledge is power, and Little Free Libraries will allow New Yorkers from all walks of life to share resources and stories. We are constantly reimagining the potential uses of our NYRP parks and gardens and are now proud to not only provide a place to enjoy a book, but to get one, too!”
