Craigslist founder makes plans to convert his Village duplex into a two-family home
It’s more common to see NYC’s rich and famous buy to combine, but Craig Newmark—better known as the brains behind Craigslist—appears to want to cozy up in smaller quarters. Back in May, Newmark dropped nearly $6 million on a massive 6,075-square-foot, three-bedroom duplex at 52 West 9th Street, and now according to The Real Deal, he’s making plans to transform the generous spread into a two-family home.
The red-brick building was originally constructed in 1845 and was used as the home of the Hans Hoffman Art School from 1936 to 1938. The building was later converted into multiple residences, and then again revamped into the three co-op address it is today. Newmark’s home occupies the first two floors, with bedrooms located on the second floor.
Steeped in historic details, the home features 11-foot ceilings, a wood-burning fireplace with a carved stone mantel and stained glass windows, among other ornamentation. A landscaped garden with stone fountain sits right off the dining room.
But it’s the private two-story carriage house that’s been converted into temperature-controlled library with a wood-burning fireplace that really makes the space special.
As we previously reported, before becoming the home of Newmark, the co-op was that of Wall Street investment banker/attorney Robert Pirie who died last year.
