New York Wheel’s first two pedestals arrive on Staten Island
In early October, the New York Wheel welcomed its four massive legs at the South Brooklyn Marine Terminal in Sunset Park—the first physical components of the project to find their way to NYC. Now another milestone has been met, as Friday marked the first delivery of parts to the official Staten Island construction site. According a press release, two of the wheel’s four pedestals have been unloaded, and another two will arrive later this week.
The pedestals were brought over by barge from Montreal and shipped down the Hudson River to Staten Island. To facilitate the movement of parts to the site, a $3 million temporary construction dock was put in place by local S.I. Firm Reicon.
Like the legs (still being processed at South Brooklyn Marine Terminal), which clock in at 500 tons each and measure 18 feet wide and 275 feet tall, the pedestals are just as enormous, measuring 18 feet in diameter and composed of 100 tons of welded steel. When finished, the wheel will rise 630 feet (or 60 stories) and will be the world’s tallest.
More than three million people are expected to patronize the new amusement annually once it opens in the spring of 2018.
The $590 million project is part of a $1.2 billion redevelopment of Staten Island’s North Shore.
