Trump hopes to spend weekends in NYC at Trump Tower during presidency

It appears that Donald Trump missed the memo that being President is a round-the-clock job, not a 9-5 gig. As the Times reports, the president-elect has been asking aides how many nights he’ll have to pass in D.C., and whether or not he’ll be able to stay in his 5th Avenue penthouse on weekends. “He has told them he would like to do what he is used to, which is spending time in New York when he can,” writes the paper. During the campaign, Trump would often forgo local hotels, opting instead to fly to NYC late at night just so he could sleep in his own bed.
The Times puts forward that the Donald had little idea how dramatically his life would change, and parting ways with his beloved home of 30 years will prove to be one of the more difficult sacrifices he’ll have to make. The paper outlines a typical morning for Trump, which includes waking up at 5 A.M., reading several newspapers, watching a bit of the morning news, and then putting around the house until going into the office (on the 26th floor of the same building), usually around 10 A.M.
Trump has also poured a lot of time and money into his lavish pad over the decades. The penthouse has been outfitted in a Louis XIV style and is covered in marble and 24-karat gold—“a tribute to his own self image,” as he’s described it. Trump’s biographer, Michael D’Antonio, recalled him boasting on a tour, “This is a very complex unit. Building this unit, if you look at the columns and the carvings, this building, this unit was harder than building the building itself.”
Trump’s neighbors would surely like to see him stay in Washington as much as possible. As we reported Friday, since Trump won the election, protestors, police and the Secret Service have become a major disruption for the building and surrounding streets. Anyone who enters Trump Tower is required to show ID, and even residents are being patted down.
Aides are hoping that Trump will change his mind about commuting once he gets settled in at the White House and more comfortable in his role as President.
