July is heating up in the art world (and on the thermometer!). Take the month to check out my curatorial debut with Times Square Arts every night on the ad screens, head to City Hall Park to enjoy a new sculpture series, and definitely be sure to frolic in the balloon room by Martin Creed at the Park Avenue Armory. Check out the 1920s Chinese screen siren Ruan Lingyu in a film set to a live score by Gary Lucas, or head outdoors for a screening of April and the Extraordinary World in Riverside Park. Head to the Bronx for an all-female show at Wall Works Gallery, or if you’re in the Hamptons, spend a day at Market Art and Design at the Bridgehampton Museum.
Beau Stanton’s Voyage #MidnightMoment ↑
Times Square Screens
Every night in July, 11:57pm to Midnight
I’ve always been a huge supporter of Times Square Arts’ MidnightMoment take over of the Times Square ad screens, and now I’ve unbelievably become the curator of one! My long-time collaborator Beau Stanton has translated his maritime-lore oil paintings into a beautiful animation that takes Times Square visitors under the sea and literally into the belly of the beast every night in July.
Martin Creed: The Back Door ↑
Park Avenue Armory, 643 Park Avenue
Through August 7
If you haven’t visited the art wonderland that is Martin Creed’s The Back Door, be sure to get there before it’s gone forever. As if a ROOM FULL OF BALLOONS YOU CAN PLAY IN isn’t enough, Creed has activated most of the gorgeous, historic rooms of the armory, that are often closed to the public. Expect a few hours of total fun and wonder.
The Language of Things ↑
City Hall Park
Everyday through September 29
The Public Art Fund’s latest public art exhibition has sprung up in City Hall Park just in time for summer enjoyment. The beautiful exhibition explores language beyond the word- in sculptures by Carol Bove, Tino Sehgal, Claudia Comte, Michael Dean, Adam Pendleton, Chris Watson and Hannah Weiner.
Market Art + Design ↑
The Bridgehampton Museum, 2368 Montauk Highway, Bridgehampton, NY
