Robert Young Gives an Outdated ’80s Home in East Hampton a Mid-Century Mod Makeover
This East Hampton home was originally built in the 1980s, but was recently renovated with a modern and airy flair reflective of its inhabitants’ colorful personalities. Led by Robert Young Architects, the transformation included new roof lines, as well as the addition of a small dining room and an outdoor living space, strategically placed to open up the existing space and bring in more natural light, which was the secondary goal of the update.
After the structural changes were complete, Young transitioned the interior design to duo Chris Vila and Kristen Schonwald-Vila, who populated the home with a collection of well-curated pieces from prominent mid-century-modern designers, including Warren Platner, Eero Saarinen, Jens Risom, Finn Juhl, and Florence Knoll. The layout of the living room was centered around Platner’s iconic coffee table and Juhl’s 45 Chairs, and the decor is tastefully accented by varying patterns and textures, adding an almost bohemian appeal.
As part of the renovation an elevated sense of play was weaved throughout the interior, achieved by the careful curation of specialized objects such as surfboards and other disparate elements. The surprising collection adds to the home good humor and cheer, and nowhere is this more present than in the kids’ playroom.
Across the hallway is the TV room, featuring a neutral color palette with vibrant pops of color like a bright yellow surfboard and red coffee table.
