Chilean Design Firm Makes Beautiful Room Dividers From Sustainable Pine Fibers
Whether you live on an open-plan loft or tiny studio, you’ve probably, at least once, considered a reconfiguration of the space. Meet Ensamble, modular flexible room dividers, and the latest project by Chilean studio The Andes House. Lightweight, flexible and low-cost, the panels are easy to assemble into a small office or separate micro-space and were crafted from a sustainable composite material made from pine fibers.
The Andes House is a product and interior design studio based in Santiago. Their work expieriments with natural materials (reed, stone, wood and ceramics, for examaple) for high-quality results.
For the latest project Ensamble (assembly in Spanish), they worked with a composite material made from adiata pine fibers
The project started when local forestry company Arauco approached the studio to develop new applications for one of their products, the Cholguán boards. Cholguán is a natural, lightweight composite wood board commonly found in industrial packaging and backing for furniture, which the forestry company has been actually developing for over 50 years.
The thin hardboard panels are made through a wet process, where a liquid mixture ends up as a flexible dry product, which the studio made the most of on the curved angles of the panels.
The panels offer modularity and some come complete with perforations, which allow office accessories and other small items to be hung within easy reach, like a pegboard.
In addition to office applications, the designers are working on designing an assemblage of boards to be used in schools, libraries, and in emergency situations.
