Inside a Manhattan Couple’s Modern Woodland Escape Designed by Resolution: 4 Architecture
A city couple commissioned Resolution: 4 Architecture to come up with a site-specific home for escaping their busy Manhattan lives on the weekend. Located on a sloped wooded terrain in Kent, not too far from the city, the beautiful Lakeside House combines wooden interiors, classic furniture items and privileged views onto the mirrored waters of the Sagamore Lake. Although bright and airy inside, the modern dwelling is grounded and strong and relates to its site through the use of natural materials.
Resolution: 4 Architecture is a highly acclaimed ten-person firm based in the New York City founded by Joseph Tanney and Robert Luntz. They specialize in developing sustainable properties, which can be crafted from their Modern Modular structures, or simply by restoring what’s been left behind. An example of the latter is this beautiful home which was built on existing foundation and around an old fireplace.
The weekend getaway’s 2,400 square feet are spread across two levels; the lower floor is an open plan hosting the kitchen, dining and communal living areas, while sleeping quarters can be found on the top floor.
Natural light streams through floor-to-ceiling glass doors on the west side of the home, while on the east side you’ll find a Kal-wall system enclosed bathroom, a second floor hallway and a stairwell.
The second level is far more private and keeps the master bedroom and guest bedroom. However, both rooms open up to a wooden deck overlooking an expanse of trees.
In contrast with its breezy interiors, the home’s exteriors appear heavy and sturdy and you can still see the original stone foundation peeking out beneath the cedar-clad siding and silver zinc panels.
