Beastie Boy Mike D Gets $5.5M for Fun and Funky Cobble Hill Townhouse
The Post reports that Beastie Boy Mike D (Michael Diamond) has sold his fun and funky Cobble Hill townhouse for $5.5 million, just $150,000 under the asking price. He and his wife Tamra Davis (a cookbook author, online cooking show host, and music video director) bought the four story, five-bedroom home back in 2011 for $3.1 million and then undertook a quirky yet modern renovation. Thanks to custom design details like Brooklyn toile wallpaper, sculptural hanging kitchen shelves, a giant mirrored swing in the bedroom, and an enormous master bath, the Italianate home was featured in several publications, including a New York Times house tour titled “Licensed to Grill.” And now, all of Mike D’s hard work has paid off with a pretty nice profit.
The 3,200-square-foot home was built in 1853, and post renovation, Diamond described it as “a suburban dream re-interpreted for Brooklyn.” Despite all of the new, contemporary additions, the couple did retain much of the townhouse’s historic bones, such as the marble mantel and wood-burning fireplace in the living room, crown molding and wide plank wood floors.
The kitchen boasts a Carrara marble island, sleek floor-to-ceiling wooden cabinetry, and restaurant-worthy hanging glass shelves created by Bushwick-based metalworks shop ESP Metal Crafts. Off the kitchen is a deck complete with a grill.
Stairs from the kitchen deck lead down to the large backyard with manicured lawn, patio, and basketball area. The yard opens to the screening/media room, which showcases the Brooklyn Toile wallpaper, a collaboration between Diamond, local wallpaper company Flavor Paper, and design firm Revolver New York. This floor also contains a charming auxiliary kitchen.
The upper floors host the two children’s bedrooms, as well as the remarkable full-floor master suite, the home’s crowning jewel. Here, the ceiling was opened up to create a loft-like space that feels like a strange but attractive mix of gothic and rustic.
Diamond was so inspired by his design work at his own home that he recently helped his friend, an architect, design a new-construction townhouse in Boerum Hill, which sold for $5 million. We can only imagine that his new residence (no word yet on where that’ll be) is going to be even more spectacular.
