Moooi Makes Stunning Photorealistic Carpets Using iPhone Photos
Dutch design is famous for its daring, playful, and smart solutions, and these photorealistic carpets by Moooi completely exemplify that esthetic. The furniture and lighting brand recently launched Moooi Carpets, a sister company with an advanced print-on-demand technology that allows people to design their own rug — or choose one from its Signature Collection by the likes of Ross Lovegrove or Christian Lacroix. Featuring extreme high definition and available in immense dimensions that could cover floors, walls, and ceilings, these stunning carpets might be setting a new trend for interior decoration.
Unveiled in the bustling Milan fair back in April, the innovative concept stands as “the reinvention of the carpet,” according to Moooi’s (recently ex) CEO Casper Vissers. Thanks to the use of new advanced technology that prints images at a higher definition than has previously been possible, the results are very vivid.
The printing plant can produce everything from small rugs to full-width fitted carpets. The giant 328-metre-long printing machine is located in Germany, and has a range of 648 colors to choose from. Its high-end specs allow the ink to go very deep into the pile of the carpet, generating a detailed definition.
To show off the extreme capabilities, the Dutch company asked 48 top international designers and brands including France’s Maison Christian Lacroix, Belgium’s Studio Job, Sweden’s Front, and Moooi co-founder Marcel Wanders, among others, to design an exclusive rug. Another designer called upon was Britain’s Ross Lovegrove, who created a marine rug directly from a photograph of seaweed he took on his iPhone.
Moooi Carpets will also produce a series of templates, Moooi Works, where customers can choose from different colors, patterns and sizes, as well as having their own photos printed on a rug.
