Art Nerd New York’s Top Event Picks for the Week, 5/28-6/3

This weekend, one of my favorite all-encompassing events is hitting the Bowery area: IDEAS CITY. There are so many things to do, you can fill up your weekend and then some! Hear about the intersection of television and art at the Jewish Museum, get inspired by creative ladies at Tedx, or party for a good cause and benefit sustainability initiatives in Panama. Investigate old New York at Paul Zone’s exhibition, zoom to the future and sample cuisine fit for Mars at The Boiler, or settle into the wonderful weird of today at Michael Alan’s latest living installation. End the weekend by being incredibly jealous of artist Brigitte Bouquet’s gorgeous home-gallery and amazing art work.

The New Museum and the surrounding neighborhood

This yearly festival for the future includes 100+ events sprawled around the Bowery area, including talks, panels, installations, kid stuff, art, food, and everything you want to do during a festival.

Dialogue and Discourse – Horace Newcomb and Lynn Spigel
The Jewish Museum, 1109 5th Ave

Art and TV, two things that don’t go together so much these days (unless you count the failed reality show “Work of Art”) but in the 1950s and ’60s, television helped bring the Modernist movement into the American home. Newcomb and Spigel discuss the role of TV in regard to art during this time, and how it remains an influencer today.

Momentum – TedxJerseyCityWomen

Say what you will about Tedx’s role as a franchise, it is bringing some interesting talks and symposiums to virtually everywhere. Tonight, head to Jerz and get inspired by creative women, network, and have some refreshments.

Growing Up In The New York Underground: From Glam To Punk
Leslie-Lohman Museum of Gay and Lesbian Art Project Space, 127-B Prince Street

I am more than obsessed with the idea of “Old New York,” really meaning anytime before the internet in my mind. This incredible exhibition gives a glimpse into photographer Paul Zone’s life in the front row of the punk scene of the 1970s.

The seminal Williamsburg gallery Pierogi/The Boiler is hosting an otherworldly feast. Visitors are invited to cook, alongside special guests, using Mars-feasible ingredients. See, art can be fun!

Soiree 4 Sustainability
Verboten, 54 North 11th Street, Williamsburg

A night of art, design and charity, this event will help to implement sustainability projects in the Kuna region of Panama. It’s also being held at one of the best party spots in Williamsburg.

This weekend, Dutch-born artist Brigitte Bouquet opens her breath-taking Bed-Stuy home to the public, transforming the massive space into a gallery of her ceramics, prints, textiles, sculptures and new wallpaper line. I’ve visited before, it is truly one of those homes that make you insanely jealous, coupled with her incredible work.

Michael Alan’s The Living Situation
Clinton Hill address revealed with ticket purchase

Artist Michael Alan is known for his epic draw-a-thons, in which he creates surrealistic “living” installations of artist models who morph and change over the evening. Booze-fueled would-be artists are allowed to sketch, observe or simply enjoy the fantastical scenes.
