1980s A-Frame Home in the Hamptons Gets a Renovation Fit for a Barefoot Lifestyle
The Red Dirt Road House is a stunningly simple A-frame home with no red in sight. Painted pitch black on the outside and featuring an all-white interior, this woodland retreat is minimal, modern, and has an Australian vibe to it. It was designed by Amee Allsop for a city-based Aussie client who mainly uses the property in the summer but also bought the property with dreams of hosting yoga retreats all year around.
Located on a two-acre woodland plot in East Hampton, the home is a renovation of an ’80s construction that had good bones. Because the retreat was being designed for an Aussie, the architect added in distinctive Australian features so her client would feel right at home. One of these wonderful design additions from includes a beautiful wrap-around wooden deck that in addition to providing entertainment space, cultivates a strong indoor/outdoor connection.
Each of the bedrooms and bathrooms were redesigned to maximize space and simplify the floor plan. Allsop also incorporated a large skylight along the ridge of the house to bring plenty of natural light into the living room and kitchen. On the master bedroom she opened a slot window so the client would benefit from morning light—there’s also a deep soaking tub right by the bed!
Designed to be enjoyed barefoot, the architect installed extra-wide floorboards made from local Douglas fir. The planks were first bleached and then finished with a white wash. This extra clean aesthetic is fragmented by accents of contrasting black and exposed wood seen in the fixtures, modern pieces of lighting and several artworks and everyday household objects.
Apart from enjoying the retreat during the summer and holidays, the client had a vision of hosting yoga retreats at the home. With this in mind, Allsop transformed the original basement from a dark and damp rec room into an open plan living space with a bathroom and majestic views of the adjacent trees.
We couldn’t have dreamt up a better environment for asanas and ohms.
