Wishbone: The World’s Smallest Smart Thermometer Checks Body, Object, and Environment Temperature

January 29, 2015

There’s only so much our iPhones can do when it comes to thermometer functions. They can tell us the temperature in a specific geographic location, but not in the exact spot where we’re standing, and they can’t read our personal body heat or that of a pot of water. Enter Wishbone, the world’s smallest smart thermometer that can accurately check body, object, or environment temperature in two seconds (compared with 30 seconds for a traditional thermometer) just by hooking up to your smart phone. And it requires no contact at all.

Wishbone was first conceived (no pun intended) when its designers became parents and couldn’t find anything on the market to quickly read their infant’s temperature and track its patterns. The unique 45-degree Y-shape makes it much easier to operate and view the app simultaneously, with one branch containing the sensor and the other the battery.

The device plugs right into an Android or iOS device’s audio jack. It then uses an infrared sensor to detect temperature without any contact. To take body temperature simply point the sensor at forehead skin; for environment temperature, just point it towards the sky or ceiling.

The data feature allows users to make separate profiles for each individual in their household and create charts to better understand the information at hand.

Wishbone is currently seeking funding through Kickstarter, and it’s already far surpassed its $20,000 goal, raising over $46,000 with 27 days to go. The goal is to start producing the product in April, and they’ll cost between $25 and $35.
