No Need to Read, Now You Can Watch ‘The New Yorker’ Magazine on Amazon
As much as we love The New Yorker, we have to admit it’s often difficult to find time every week to read the magazine from front to back. But enter Oscar-winning director Alex Gibney and producer Dave Snyder, ready to save us from our literary guilt. Now you can watch every issue of the magazine comfortably from your screen. Amazon has just launched The New Yorker Presents, a brand new docu-series that compacts the experience of reading the weekly mag into an easily digestible half-hour.
The show combines all the best bits of the magazine into a sure-to-please format that includes documentary shorts, animations, and scripted scenes. Each segment is also followed up with one the magazine’s satiric cartoons come to life in stop-motion. The variation in presentation style keeps the 30 minutes feeling fresh rather than flat, effectively taking viewers through each story without missing a beat. The first episode (the pilot) is a pretty star-studded affair, featuring cameos from actor Alan Cumming, performance artist Marina Abramović, and actor Andrew Garfield, who gives us a dramatic reading of a poem by Matthew Dickman.
The move to the screen is quite brilliant for the magazine. As the creators explain, not only is the magazine able to better engage existing subscribers that might be short on time by teasing them with a trailer of sorts, but they’ll also be able to draw in new readers. As incredible as the magazine’s content may be, long-form continues to struggle amongst the masses in today’s 140-character internet age.
You can watch the first episode for free here.
