REVEALED: HWKN Will Bring a Shiny and Shingled YOTEL Hotel/Condo to Williamsburg
One of our favorite New York architects will soon be making their mark in Williamsburg. HWKN has just revealed new renderings for a brand new 14-story YOTEL coming to Brooklyn at 646 Lorimer Street. The images, which give us a taste of the exterior, are right on the mark with the YOTEL style and the rapidly changing neighborhood—and the design is what exactly you’d expect from HWKN: an eye-catching form with lots of greenspace.
The new hotel will boast 100,000 square feet of mixed-use space. At the base of the building will be 20,000 square feet of retail with large street level exposures, and on level with the BQE will be a vibrant rooftop garden atop which the 110-room YOTEL tower will be set. The hotel plinth will be topped by six to eight glassy condos, each offering expansive views of Brooklyn, the East River and Manhattan.
In a press release, the architects wrote that the goal of the new design was to “position the new YOTEL as one of the most iconic buildings in New York and a landmark gateway to Williamsburg.” The design is inspired by the industrial nature of the Brooklyn nabe, where the primarily monochrome tower features a cascading shingle effect façade that gradates in tone and finish. Inside, premium cabins will come with YOTEL’s signature space-saving convertible bed, monsoon rain showers and techno-wall with flat screen TVs.
Matthias Hollwich, principal of HWKN says, “We felt it was important to create a distinct and modern design that would establish YOTEL Williamsburg as a destination for global travelers, while the sculptural qualities of the building also connect with Williamsburg’s artistic bent.”
Marc Kushner, principal of HWKN, adds ”Williamsburg is an amazing community—it deserves architecture that strives to match its richness and vibrancy.”
The architects are working with developer Synapse Development Group on the project. The hotel is slated to open in 2017.
