Float Is an Exquisite Coffee Table That Looks Like a Lotus Pond

November 24, 2014

Float is a unique coffee table designed as an exquisite optical illusion for the home. Created by London’s Central Saint Martins graduate Olivia Lee, it appears as a levitating lotus pond supported by a trio of intertwining stems. In addition to providing tranquility for the eye, it creates some surprising visual effects when objects are placed on it.

Float is an object that blends three Asian ideals together: peace, fortune and tranquility. The low, Oriental-style table is made from real lotus leaves sourced in South East Asia and suspended in cast resin. While its thin organic legs may look like intertwining stems, they are actually made from powder-coated steel that allow the “pond” to gently rest on them.

The table also acts like a giant plano-convex lens that gives it some some surprising optical effects. Any object placed on it will appear to float on water.

Float is part of Industry+, a curated collection of high-quality Asian products that blend experimental industrial techniques with artisanal craftsmanship.
