Norman Foster-Designed Yacht is a Sleek Way to Cruise the Open Seas
Norman Foster has designed some of the most futuristic structures in the world. From the Gherkin in London to the Heart Tower in New York, his creations are unexpected and tech-focused. But did you know that Foster + Partners dabbles in boat design? They’ve just launched (no pun intended) the new Alen Yacht 68. The sleek schooner is not quite as ground-breaking as the firm’s architectural works, but it “combines the elegant social spaces of a cruising yacht with the fun of a day boat.”
Foster + Partners has actually made several forays into the boat world in the past. Their new 68-foot-long vessel lacks some of the sci-fi design of the others, but it’s still incredibly sleek and can go up to 45 knots.
The yacht interior, which was designed to characterize flying across waves, is characterized by lounge-like leather, onyx, bleached oak, and decorative teak elements. Unlike traditional boat fittings, the furniture doesn’t touch the inside of the hull, but rather traces the contours of the white leather walls.
The galley and bathroom are in the center of the boat, and to the stern is the master suite, which feature a double bed and suspended leather chaise lounge. Down in the prow of the yacht, the lounge is naturally top-lit by a central strip of glazing.
The driver’s seat also functions as one of the outdoor dining benches. It can be entirely elevated so the whole cruising gang can “sit up front and steer a course.” And with a capacity for 12 guests, we can see this turning into quite the party.
