Event: Join Top NYC Architects and Artists at the 14+ Foundation Benefit to Build Schools in Zambia
The second Annual 14+ Foundation Benefit on October 2nd will support the building of schools in Zambia with the help of top New York architects and artists. Julian Schnabel, Rashid Johnson, and the Bruce High Quality Foundation have donated works for a live art auction, and Solange Knowles is set to perform. The event will take place at the Diamond Horseshoe from 6:00pm to 2:00am. It follows the organization’s work on the Chipakata Children’s Academy in Lusaka, Zambia, a new school, orphanage, and community facility that will provide arts-based learning programs, as well as daily meals.
The 14+ Foundation is a NYC-based non-profit co-founded in 2012 by Joseph Mizzi, President of Sciame Construction, and Nchimunya Wulf, a native Zambian. The foundation’s mission is to develop and build schools and orphanages for African children.
Chipakata Children’s Academy is the organization’s first project. Construction is underway on the Zambia-based school, and when complete, children will no longer have to walk five miles each way to the nearest school. Several community-based initiatives have already been completed on the 25-acre site, including new roads and infrastructure, a grinding mill, and a retail shop that will provide access to essential goods and services for the village. The first phase of the project will open in 2014, and subsequent phases will include numerous agricultural initiatives, a health clinic, and other important facilities.
The project is using local materials and resources and employing Zambian construction firms and community members. The pro-bono design team is comprised of Susan Rodriguez, Partner at Ennead Architects; Frank Lupo, FAIA; Randy Antonia Lott, Director at Moed d’Armas & Shannon; and Nat Oppenheimer, Principal, Robert Silman Associates (Structural Engineers).
