Brooklyn-Based Designer Danielle Trofe Grows Compostable Lights From Mushrooms
Danielle Trofe Design is a Brooklyn-based studio that creates function-forward, sustainable furniture and lighting. One of their most curious designs is the Mush-Lume collection, which is not manufactured but rather grown from mushrooms. Organic and biodegradable, these brilliant designs will light up your days and, most likely, end up in your compost bin.
The collection includes two different pendant lights and a table lamp shaped like a mushroom, with interiors painted using organic milk paint. The Mush-Lume Hemi Pendant is a huge, 24-inch dome structure with an elegant mushroom texture and hand-blown glass diffuser. The two smaller designs, the Mush-Lume Trumpet Pendant and the Mush-Lume Table Lamp, beautifully combine the fungi material with hand-turned Ash.
Trofe’s innovative lights are made using Ecovative Design‘s patented growing process. This ingenious, sustainable technique is a great alternative to plastics. It uses agricultural byproducts like seed husks and corn stalks in combination with mushroom mycelium, which binds the components. The mixture grows inside a mold for several days, and once it takes the desired shape, the material is heated and dried until ready to light up a room.
